), a global leader in embedded Power Architecture[TM] processing, optical transport, and storage solutions, announced the newest member of its embedded processor family, the PowerPC[R] 460GTx. Based on the Power Architecture standard, the PowerPC 460GTx processor combines a performance optimized PowerPC core with a high-bandwidth memory and I/O subsystem to support demanding embedded processing applications. Protecting the software investment customers made in AMCC's PowerPC 440 processor family, the PowerPC 460GTx provides a high- performance migration path for customers using the AMCC PowerPC 440GX and 460GT processors.

The PowerPC 460GTx offers advanced features including four Gigabit Ethernet ports with TCP/IP TCP/IP

assist, 801.p- and q-compatible QoS, encryption/decryption engine, high-performance memory controller and high-speed I/O subsystem. The unique combination of high-performance features are designed to meet the demanding requirements of the networking, wireless infrastructure, and general purpose control applications.

"With high integration and speeds of up to 1.4GHz, the PowerPC 460GTx meets the needs of demanding networking applications," said Linley Gwennap, principal analyst of The Linley Group. "AMCC has accelerated its pace of product introductions, building a broad portfolio of Power Architecture processors."

The PowerPC 460GTx embedded processor features a PowerPC superscalar CPU core with clock frequencies ranging from 800MHz to 1.4GHz and performance of 2 DMIPS/MHz (2800DMIPS DMIPS Dhrystone MIPS (Million Instructions Per Second)  at 1.4GHz). The PowerPC 460GTx also contains a 512KB level 2 cache See L2 cache.

A chip that is custom designed for a specific application rather than a general-purpose chip such as a microprocessor.  and FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) A type of gate array that is programmed in the field rather than in a semiconductor fab. Containing up to hundreds of thousands of gates, there are a variety of FPGA architectures on the market.  devices, the 460GTx includes an 8-lane Gen 2 PCI Express interface, this interface can be bifurcated bi·fur·cate

into two independent 4-lane Gen 2 PCI Express interfaces.

The 460GTx features two internal buses. The primary bus is a 128-bit two-way crossbar with simultaneous read/write operations from each bus segment supporting 12.8GBytes/s peak bandwidth. A secondary 128-bit bus with simultaneous read/write operation provides an additional 6.4GBytes/s for a combined total 19.2 GBytes/s of peak bandwidth. The bus topology enables concurrent read/write transactions between high speed I/Os, other peripherals, and memory.

"Customers are demanding high-performance, feature-rich processors with lower power consumption," said Sam Fuller, Vice President of Marketing for AMCC. "The new PowerPC 460GTx offers significant time to market advantages and maintains AMCC's embedded leadership position."

When it comes to managing power dissipation, the 460GTx follows the leadership path set by today's AMCC processor family. For example, the total typical power dissipation for the 460GTx with 8 lanes of PCI Express, DDR533 memory, and 833MHz processor is as low as 8 watts. At above 1GHz CPU and DDR800 memory the total typical power is less than 10 watts.

Samples and evaluation kits of the PowerPC 460GTx will be available in 4Q08. For more information on this and other AMCC's storage processors please contact your nearest AMCC sales office or visit: http://www.amcc.com/Embedded/.
