:AMCC), a leader in high-bandwidth silicon connectivity solutions for the world's optical networks, Monday detailed the industry's most complete network processing platform for building Internet infrastructure equipment at the intelligent optical edge.

The nP7250 network processor, nPX5700 traffic management chipset and nPX5800 switch fabric solution -- from the pioneer of network processors, MMC See MultiMediaCard and Microsoft Management Console.  Networks, a subsidiary of AMCC -- combine with the nPsoft(TM) development environment to provide a fully integrated, highly programmable, feature-rich platform for OC-48c and OC-192c connections.

The solution set includes the first single-chip, fully programmable network processor capable of wire-speed, single-stream, full-duplex OC-48c (not just channelized Refers to an architecture that transmits data in channels. It often refers to the 64 Kbps channels in T1 lines, which were originally developed to handle digitized voice streams (TDM). See TDM.  OC-48) for both packets and cells; the industry's most feature-rich 10 Gbps traffic management offering; a highly scalable and power, board space, and cost-optimized 320 Gbps (160 Gbps full-duplex) switch fabric, with architectural scalability to 1.2 Tbps; and a system-oriented software environment that addresses inter-processor messaging and other complete platform-related issues, not just network processor software alone. The combined platform has been architected to mesh seamlessly, allowing networking and communications vendors to minimize time-to-market, while delivering system Quality of Service (QoS) and other features not possible with most separately architected components.

nP7250 OC-48c Network Processor

The nP7250, a member of the company's third-generation family of policy-enabled NPUs, is the industry's first single-chip, fully programmable solution capable of full wire-speed processing of both packets and cells in single-stream, full-duplex OC-48c -- a significant accomplishment over other solutions that merely support multiple channelized OC-12 streams. The nP7250 also supports 4xOC-12, 16xOC-3, and 2xGigabit Ethernet connections and achieves wire-speed, feature-rich OC-48c processing with just two of the company's patented, highly efficient nPcore(TM) Network-optimized Instruction Set Computing (NISC NISC National Institute of Senior Centers

. It is also the industry's most programmable, boasting a fundamentally simplified, single logical processor programming model, complemented by the nPsoft(TM) development environment. Off-the-shelf IP routing and ATM software libraries and open APIs combine with a rich set of code-generation and debugging tools, including simulators, graphical symbolic debugging, and one of the industry's only C/C C/C Center to Center

The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  value-added NPU (Network Processing Unit) Same as network processor.  software features. The solution is packaged in a 673-pin PBGA PBGA Plastic Ball Grid Array . The nP7250 is designed to interface seamlessly with AMCC's framer/mapper product family, enabling the industry's fastest time-to-market and most versatile hardware platform.

AMCC's next-generation nPcore-based solution, sampling later in 2001, will support wire-speed, single-stream (clear channel) OC-192c and 10 Gbps Ethernet connections while preserving software compatibility with earlier developments.

nPX5700 10 Gbps Traffic Manager

The feature-rich 10 Gbps traffic management chipset provides the subscriber bandwidth provisioning, rigorous admission control, and flexible scheduling capabilities required by a wide variety of intelligent carrier, service provider, and CPE (Customer Premises Equipment) Communications equipment that resides on the customer's premises.

platforms. The nPX5700 per-flow queuing mechanism offers unparalleled levels of granularity, with support for tens of thousands of subscribers and hundreds of thousands of queues. OEMs can implement a variety of sophisticated admission control techniques including dynamic discard threshold levels, Random Early Detection (RED), Weighted RED, Early Packet Discard (EPD EPD

), Partial Packet Time-out, and more to ensure congestion control and enforce programmed service levels. System vendors are further assured of maximum flexibility in implementing policy-based QoS features, with support for Strict Priority, Weighted Fair Queuing See traffic engineering methods. , Round Robin, Weighted RR, Constant Bit Rate, Variable Bit Rate, and minimum and maximum bandwidth control, among others.

The nPX5700 solution consists of the nPX5710 control logic chip (responsible for admission control, scheduling and queuing functions), packaged in a 601-pin PBGA, and the nPX5720 buffering chip (responsible for the management of payload memory), packaged in a 1125-pin PBGA.

nPX5800 40-320 Gbps (20-160 Gbps Full Duplex) Switch Fabric

The nPX5800 switch fabric is a high-speed, scalable switching element that completes AMCC's total network processing platform. The nPX5800 implements non-blocking virtual output queuing technology to achieve 40 Gbps (20 Gbps full duplex) to 320 Gbps (160 Gbps full duplex) switching capacity. Scalable to support up to 16 full-duplex 10 Gbps OC-192c Packet Over SONET A metropolitan area network (MAN) or wide area network (WAN) transport technology that carries IP packets directly over SONET transmission without any data link facility such as ATM in between.  (POS (1) See point of sale and packet over SONET.

), ATM, or 10G Ethernet interfaces with significantly lower chip count than existing solutions, AMCC's multi-service switching solutions will continue to meet the needs of bandwidth-hungry, yet power and board-space sensitive service provider applications. AMCC's nPX switching family has additional future architectural scalability to 1.2 Tbps and beyond.

For seamless platform implementations, AMCC utilizes its proven, non-blocking, QoS-enabled ViX(TM) interconnect, which eliminates the need for a high-speed memory bus and replaces it with much simpler, low-cost, point-to-point connections. AMCC is an active participant in the Network Processing Forum The Network Processing Forum (NPF) was organized to facilitate and accelerate the development of next-generation networking and telecommunications products based on network processing technologies. The NPF was merged into the Optical Internetworking Forum in June of 2006.  (formerly CSIX) and is driving towards the definition and adoption of next-generation, standard 10 Gbps and QoS-enabled interfaces.

Pricing and Availability

The nP7250 network processor and nPX5700 traffic manager chipsets are expected to sample this quarter (Q2); the nPX5800 is expected to sample in Q3. In volume, the nP7250 is priced beginning at $300; nPX5710 and nPX5720 at $400 each; and the nPX5800 at $600.
