SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 29, 2000

AMCC's Popular S3067 Transceiver Now Offers a 50% Reduction in

Jitter Generation, Further Extending AMCC's Leadership in the

Rapidly Expanding OC-48 Market

Applied Micro Circuits Corp. (AMCC AMCC Applied Micro Circuits Corporation

) (Nasdaq:AMCC), a leader in high-bandwidth silicon connectivity solutions for the world's optical networks, today announced the availability of the latest generation S3067 SONET/SDH/ATM transceiver with enhanced jitter performance and extended rate capabilities.

Featuring dramatically enhanced jitter generation of only 3.5mUI, the S3067 further improves the superior design margin of the industry's first integrated OC-48 transceiver solution with Forward Error Correction A communications technique that can correct bad data on the receiving end. Before transmission, the data are processed through an algorithm that adds extra bits for error correction. If the transmitted message is received in error, the correction bits are used to repair it.  (FEC See forward error correction.

The S3067, which has already proven to be ideal for next-generation DWDM (Dense WDM) The term given to wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) when significantly more channels were being added. Since WDM is increasingly more "dense" all the time, both terms are used synonymously. See WDM.

Although some HDTV sets are available in standard (rather square) screen sizes, the overwhelming majority of sets are wide screen, which eliminates , Fast Ethernet, FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface) Often pronounced "fiddy," it was a LAN and MAN access method that had its heyday in the mid-1990s. FDDI was an ANSI standard token passing network that transmitted 100 Mbps over optical fiber up to 10 kilometers. , D1 Video, SONET/SDH OC-48, OC-24, OC-12 or OC-3 frequencies.

"The outstanding jitter generation specifications of the S3067 have been dramatically reduced to half that of other transceiver solutions on the market," said Glenn Pohly, AMCC's senior product marketing manager for telecom products. "The S3067 supports more protocols than any other transceiver on the market today, making it ideally suited for the emerging multi-service MAN infrastructure."

The S3067 performs all necessary serial-to-parallel and parallel-to-serial functions in conformance with SONET/SDH transmission and FEC standards. On-chip clock synthesis is performed by a high-frequency PLL PLL - phase-locked loop  allowing the use of a slower external transmit clock reference. The chip can be used with a 155.52 to 178 MHz reference clock, in support of existing system clocking schemes, and includes a low jitter LVPECL LVPECL Low Voltage Positive Emitter Coupled Logic  interface, diagnostic loopback mode and lock detect circuit.

Pricing and Availability

The S3067 is packaged in a 156-pin TBGA TBGA Tape Ball Grid Array (ASAT, Inc.)

and is currently in volume production. AMCC solution set pricing can be obtained from the company by calling 800/755-AMCC (800/755-2622).

About AMCC

AMCC designs, develops, manufactures and markets high-performance, high-bandwidth silicon solutions for the world's optical networks. AMCC utilizes a combination of high-frequency analog, mixed-signal and digital design expertise coupled with system-level knowledge and multiple silicon process technologies to offer integrated circuit products that enable the transport of voice and data over fiber optic networks. The company's system solution portfolio includes PMD (Polarization Mode Dispersion) The type of dispersion that occurs in singlemode fiber due to a lack of perfect symmetry in the fiber and from external pressures on the cable. Light travels over singlemode fiber in two polarization states. , PHY, framer/mapper, network processor, traffic management and switch fabric devices that address the high-performance needs of the evolving intelligent optical network. AMCC's corporate headquarters and wafer fabrication facilities are located in San Diego. Sales and engineering offices are located throughout the world.
