--Utilizing AMCC's Proven nP5(TM), Fifth Generation Network Processor Architecture, the nP3740 and nP3750 Enable Customers to Reduce Power, Density and Cost While Offering Greater Design Flexibility and Richer Levels of Hierarchy

Applied Micro Circuits Corporation (AMCC) (NASDAQ:AMCC) today announced the nP3740 and nP3750, the newest members of the nP3700 family of 5Gbps integrated network A network that supports both data and voice and/or different networking protocols. See converged network and new public network.  processors and traffic managers. Optimized for packet processing applications within the access and metro transport markets, the nP3740 and nP3750 maintain best-in-class network processing performance, traffic management and software compatibility that system vendors require today.

The previously released nP3700 and nP3710 network processors target Multi-Service Switches, Core, Edge Routers, DSLAMs and OC-48 AAL (ATM Adaption Layer) The part of the ATM protocol that breaks up application packets into 48-byte payloads which become ATM cells when the 5-byte headers are attached. The AAL resides between the higher layer transport protocols and the ATM layer. 5 SAR (Segmentation And Reassembly) The protocol that converts data to cells for transmission over an ATM network. It is the lower part of the ATM Adaption Layer (AAL), which is responsible for the entire operation. See AAL.

applications, whereas the new nP3740 and nP3750 devices are designed for applications including Metro Ethernet A metropolitan area network (MAN) that uses a 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) backbone rather than SONET/SDH links. Ethernet offers a more economical alternative. In a Metro Ethernet network, multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) may be deployed to provide quality of service (QoS). , IP Access Platforms, PON (Passive Optical Network) An optical point-to-multipoint access network. There are no optical repeaters or other active devices in a PON, hence the name "passive.  Access, Session border controllers and Voice gateways, offering a more customized focus on the access and transport markets.

The devices are pin and software compatible with the previously released nP3700 family of NPU (Network Processing Unit) Same as network processor.  solutions and boast the highest performance and lowest power and board area requirements of existing integrated network processing and traffic manager devices. Offering multiple generations of network processors targeting the access and metro transport applications, AMCC further delivers unparalleled power in an integrated hardware traffic manager with the nP3740 and nP3750.

"Requirements for the evolving access metro transport market are driving customers to support COS queuing, subscriber separation, flow and queue level traffic shaping Using methods to keep traffic flowing smoothly in a network. Although the term is often used synonymously with "traffic engineering," traffic shaping deals with managing the network moment to moment, whereas traffic engineering refers to the overall strategies employed in a network.  into logical ports such as VCAT channels, and physical ports such Gigabit Ethernet or fractional Gigabit Ethernet ports. AMCC's nP3700 traffic manager supports five levels of hierarchy and multiple levels of shaping to meet these evolving requirements," said Daryn Lau, vice president and general manager for AMCC's Communications Group. "By building on the success of our nP3700 solution with the nP3740 and nP3750, we can provide an even broader portfolio of flexible programming environments, high levels of performance and traffic management capabilities that are critical to our customers."

The devices were designed from the ground up using AMCC's nP5(TM) technology, enabling developers to deliver extremely fine-grained control of subscriber traffic without impacting the ability to perform complex ATM and packet internetworking at media speeds. The nP3740 and nP3750 also utilize highly optimized hardware co-processors and traffic manager hardware surrounding a fully programmable processor core.
