Lau to Discuss Impact of 802.11n on Wireless LAN Access Designs and AMCC Will Join With TeamF1 to Conduct Live Demo of Next Gen 802.11n Secure Gateway Solution

SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- Applied Micro Circuits Corporation (NASDAQ:AMCC), a global leader in embedded Power Architecture[TM] processing, optical transport and storage solutions, announced that Daryn Lau, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Integrated Communications Products business unit of AMCC, will be a keynote speaker at the first China Global Wi-Fi Summit sponsored by the Wi-Fi Alliance, the worldwide industry trade association for wireless LAN.

According to the Wi-Fi Alliance, there is an installed base of three hundred million wireless users and a worldwide growth rate of 25% per year. Chinese firms are increasingly developing equipment for the world Wi-Fi market, as well as the rapidly growing Chinese market. The size of the China market for networking equipment is expected to exceed 10.3 billion RMB (approximately $1.42b USD) next year.

Mr. Lau's presentation is entitled "The Impact of 802.11n on Access Points and Gateways." As the new 802.11n standard nears completion, new WLAN Access Point([R]) (AP) designs will incorporate draft 802.11n radios that will support data rates of over 140Mbps, nearly three times the data rate of legacy 802.11g or 802.11a radios.

Second-generation 802.11n radios, based on the finalized 802.11n standard, will be able to support data rates as high as 600Mbps. The associated processor workload for packet processing and protocol support in 802.11n-based WLAN APs and Gateways will increase significantly. New applications such as VoIP, IPStreaming and WiMesh (802.11s) will also require additional processor capacity.

In addition to the increased processor performance demands posed by new 802.11n platforms, Mr. Lau's presentation will address an additional challenge: how this increase in processing power can be delivered without adding significantly higher levels of power consumption. This is of particular importance in the Enterprise and Metro markets, where the practice of powering APs by using Power Over Ethernet (PoE) is commonly used.

Secure Gateway Solution Demonstration in AMCC's Booth # 14

As a major sponsor of the China Global Wi-Fi Summit, AMCC will host TeamF1 who will be conducting demonstrations of a unified Secure Gateway Solution (SGS) based on the PowerPC([R]) 440EPx processor. The SGS platform is designed to deliver the security, performance, cost and rapid time-to-market advantages that OEMs/ODMs require in order to meet the demands of small-to-medium businesses (SMBs) as the industry transitions to the new 802.11n standard.

The integrated SGS demonstration will include:

* The AMCC PowerPC 440EPx "Sequoia" evaluation board featuring the 440EPx processor running at 667MHz, dual PCI ports, dual Gig Ethernet ports, USB 2.0 and over 1300 DMIPs of processing power

* TeamF1's turnkey 802.11n Access Point Solution software package, featuring Firewall, VPN, Anti-Virus, Anti-Spam protection

* Support for dual Atheros([R]) AR5416 a/b/g + 11n draft-compliant radios
