AMCC's Quad SONET/SDH Physical Layer Devices Enable Customers to Efficiently Build Line Cards While Providing Savings in Power, Real Estate and System Cost.Business Editors/High-Tech Writers SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 26, 2004 The Outstanding Integrated Functionality of the S1212 and S1213 Offer System Vendors a Flexible and Cost-Efficient Means for Giving Existing Optical Designs a "Face-Lift" at a Very Low Cost Applied Micro Circuits Corp. The ideal solution for re-working any legacy products, AMCC's S1213 quad OC3/12 SONET/SDH 8-bit transceiver (TRANSmitter reCEIVER) An electronic device or circuit that transmits and receives analog or digital signals. It comes in many forms; for example, a transponder on a satellite, a network adapter in the computer or the circuits in a cellphone. requires only that customers update the optical front-end of the design, while the rest of the system, such as the framers, pointer-processors and software, can remain intact. This flexibility leverages existing optical designs and results in significant cost reductions for customers. In addition to the S1213, AMCC also today announced the availability of the S1212, a quad SONET/SDH OC-3/12 clock and data recovery device (CDR (1) See CD-R and extension. AMCC has leveraged the company's expertise in 0.13-micron CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) Pronounced "c-moss." The most widely used integrated circuit design. It is found in almost every electronic product from handheld devices to mainframes. design for the S1212 and S1213, offering customers the low power and real estate advantages of this process technology. The S1213 operates in either SONET/SDH OC-12 or OC-3 with a CDR feature, and can also be provisioned to support a combination of OC-3 and OC-12 data for individual channels. Features including diagnostic loopback, line loopback, serial clock loop timing and parallel loop back modes. It also provides customers with maximum flexibility and efficiency when adding new components to legacy systems. For maximum optical performance, the S1213 seamlessly interfaces with AMCC's best-in-class framers, including Congo and Orinoco, as well as customers' ASICs. "When redesigning line cards, customers want to maximize the growth margin on their systems. AMCC has taken a careful look at this need and delivered a viable device to meet the critical demands of upgrading legacy designs," said Neal Neslusan, director of product marketing for AMCC. "The S1212 and S1213 are low cost-per-channel solutions that are easy to design with, allowing customers to get their designs to production, and revenue, as soon as possible. The parts are great for customers wanting to leverage legacy hardware solutions. Our choice of 0.13u CMOS for these devices makes them a superb choice for new hardware architectures as well." The quad S1213 transceiver implements SONET/SDH serialization/deserialization and transmission functions. The chip can be used to implement the front-end of SONET equipment, which consists primarily of the serial transmit interface and the serial receive interface. Additionally, it handles all the functions of these two elements, including parallel-to-serial and serial-to parallel conversion, clock generation and system timing. The system timing circuitry consists of management of the data stream and clock distribution throughout the front-end. The S1213 is divided into four transceiver modules. Each of the modules can run at OC-12 or OC-3 data rates, independent from the other modules. The new device offers reductions of almost 50 percent in real estate and 66 percent in power, relative to its predecessor. The S1212 device consists of four CDR modules, all of which can run independently at the OC-12 or OC-3 data rate. It can also be provisioned to mix and match OC-3 and OC-12 data streams within the same device and configured con·fig·ure tr.v. con·fig·ured, con·fig·ur·ing, con·fig·ures To design, arrange, set up, or shape with a view to specific applications or uses: in MII 1. The S1212 does not require any external capacitors to control the PLL PLL - phase-locked loop bandwidth of the device, offering significant advantages in power (60 percent reduction) and real estate with high integration, low power and a small package. Availability The S1212 and S1213 are currently sampling to development partners, with general availability scheduled for March 2004.
