-- AMCC to extend the popular nP34xx family by leveraging the

latest network processing technology and features in order to

enable customers to scale performance while using the same

familiar architecture and programming model

Applied Micro Circuits Corp. (AMCC) (Nasdaq:AMCC) today announced the company's next-generation of single-chip, integrated network A network that supports both data and voice and/or different networking protocols. See converged network and new public network.  processor (NPU (Network Processing Unit) Same as network processor. ), traffic manager (TM) and MAC devices for multi-gigabit packet processing in Metro Ethernet A metropolitan area network (MAN) that uses a 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) backbone rather than SONET/SDH links. Ethernet offers a more economical alternative. In a Metro Ethernet network, multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) may be deployed to provide quality of service (QoS).  service provider applications.

The nP3450 and nP3454 leverage AMCC's industry-leading nPCore(TM) technology in order to enable OEMs to deliver more features across multiple protocols, while simultaneously driving down overall system power, cost and size. The highly anticipated successors to the popular nP3400 and nP3404 devices, these compatible devices will increase performance while carrying on the legacy of optimized integration and programmability, making them ideal for Ethernet over SONET (EoS) applications such as Multi-Service Provisioning Platforms (MSPP (MultiService Provisioning Platform) A high-end Cisco router that supports TDM circuits, packets and optical connections at the edge of the network. "Service providers are poised and ready to deliver an increased number of Metro Ethernet services," said Bob Wheeler, senior analyst for The Linley Group. "Programmable, low power devices like AMCC's nP3450 and nP3454 are key for vendors who are focused on meeting carriers' needs for flexible, future-proof solutions in this evolving market."

AMCC's multiple tier-one design wins with the nP3400/nP3404 and industry-leading market share provide access to extensive customer feedback, allowing AMCC to refine the product portfolio to best meet the specific needs and priorities of OEMs serving the Metro Ethernet space. Since the nP3450 and nP3454 will be software compatible with previous generations of AMCC solutions, current customers can leverage existing investments in software programming and design, thereby reducing development time and cost. AMCC's proven architecture continues to serve as the foundation for the network processing product portfolio, making the nP3450 and nP3454 a low-risk evolutionary path for next-generation, high-performance designs.

"Our proven hardware and software foundation, which has been in place over multiple generations, is the tried-and-true cornerstone upon which we develop devices that are specifically geared towards addressing the demands of a particular market segment -- in this case, Metro Ethernet service provider applications," said Keith Morris, director of product strategy for AMCC. "These devices are a key component in AMCC's broad system-oriented product portfolio, and we're pleased to extend the nP34xx family with these high performance versions that will deliver the combined strengths of superior architecture, high integration, low power and small form factor."

The nP3450 and nP3454 integrated devices will enable customers to:

-- Deliver more features across multiple protocols at lower

system power, cost and size. These new solutions will double

the performance, while maintaining the same small form factor

as the nP3400/nP3404 devices, and consuming 40-50 percent

lower power than competing solutions.

-- Reduce software development time and cost with AMCC's simple

single stage programming model, nPsoft(TM) Development

Environment, and AMCC's rich ecosystem of software partners.

Current customers will be able to leverage existing

investments in software design and development due to software

compatibility with previous generations of AMCC devices and

nPKernel software infrastructure.

-- Guarantee and measure services, thanks to the Per-Stream

Queuing(TM) and Scheduling architecture of the traffic

management unit. The traffic management unit's four classes of

service will enable layered services.

-- Make a "future-proof" decision in a constantly evolving Metro

Ethernet market. The programmability of solutions like AMCC's

nP3450/nP3454 will maximize design flexibility, unlike

hard-wired ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) Pronounced "a-sick." A chip that is custom designed for a specific application rather than a general-purpose chip such as a microprocessor.  alternatives.

-- Flexibly configure ports. Using an adaptable combination of FE

and GE ports, and a high bandwidth switch interface, the

nP3450/nP3454 devices will enable a wide range of system

configurations.

Availability

The nP3450 and nP3454 will begin sampling in Q3 2003, with general availability scheduled for Q4 2003. About AMCC

AMCC designs, develops, manufactures and markets high-performance, high-bandwidth silicon solutions empowering intelligent wide area networks. AMCC utilizes a combination of digital, mixed-signal and high-frequency analog design expertise coupled with system-level knowledge and multiple silicon process technologies to offer integrated circuit integrated circuit (IC), electronic circuit built on a semiconductor substrate, usually one of single-crystal silicon. The circuit, often called a chip, is packaged in a hermetically sealed case or a nonhermetic plastic capsule, with leads extending from it for  products that enable the transport of voice and data over fiber optic networks. The company's system solution portfolio includes switch fabric, traffic management, network processor, framer/mapper, PHY See physical layer and physical.  and PMD (Polarization Mode Dispersion) The type of dispersion that occurs in singlemode fiber due to a lack of perfect symmetry in the fiber and from external pressures on the cable.
