AMBI to Present Findings On New Proprietary Chromium Compounds; Data to be Presented at Experimental Biology Meeting in April.

AMBI Inc. (Nasdaq: AMBI) today announced that it will present summary data of a pre-clinical investigation of two new chromium products on April 3rd at the Experimental Biology 2001 Meeting in Orlando, Florida. Chromium picolinate (CP) with alpha lipoic acid (ALA) and chromium picolinate with conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) are innovative nutrition ingredient combinations developed by Nutrition 21, AMBI's nutrition ingredients subsidiary. AMBI has filed patent applications on these novel nutrition ingredients and their use.

John de la Harpe, AMBI's Chief Science Officer, commented, "Both of these ingredient combinations have been shown to work synergistically to increase glucose uptake in human skeletal muscle cell culture studies as compared to the uptake response seen when the nutrients were introduced individually. Although earlier research indicates that these nutrients individually play a beneficial role in controlling blood sugar, the significant impact of the combinations holds promise for more targeted nutritional therapies.

"When we introduced the CP + ALA combination to the cell cultures, we observed a significant improvement in glucose uptake by muscle cells under insulin-stimulated conditions, which indicates that this combination should prove to be beneficial for insulin resistant individuals. The CP + CLA combination showed a synergistic improvement in glucose uptake; however, it did so in a non insulin-stimulated environment. This unexpected result, if confirmed in vivo, would indicate that the CP + CLA combination might also have a benefit for people whose insulin production is compromised. Currently, insulin injection is the only treatment for the over 1.5 million type 1 diabetics, and becomes the eventual course of treatment for many of the more than 16 million type 2 diabetics in the US. Nutritional therapies that positively impact glucose uptake in the face of insulin insufficiency would have a major impact on the long term treatment costs associated with diabetic care."
