AMAX ELECTS TWO DIRECTORS

 NEW YORK, March 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The Board of Directors of AMAX Inc. (NYSE: AMX) has elected James D. Woods and Theodore M. Solso to its Board of Directors. Mr. Woods is chairman of the board, president and chief executive officer of Baker Hughes Incorporated; Mr. Solso is executive vice president - operations of Cummins Engine Company, Inc.
 Mr. Woods has been affiliated with Baker, a company with revenues in excess of $2.6 billion and 19,000 employees, since 1955, joining the company after four years with the United States Air Force. In 1987 he was the driving force behind the merger of two of the largest companies in the oil-service industry--Baker International and Hughes Tool Company. He assumed the position of Chairman of the merged companies in January 1989.
 In addition to his corporate responsibilities, Mr. Woods serves on the Board of Directors of Varco International, Wynn's International, the Petroleum Equipment Suppliers Association (past president), the National Ocean Industries Association (past chairman) and the American Petroleum Institute. He is a member of the National Petroleum Council. He is also a trustee of the National Boys & Girls Clubs of America and serves as a Director & Chairman of the Greater Houston YMCA and a Director of the Greater Houston Partnership.
 Mr. Solso has been associated with Cummins Engine Company since 1971, and served in executive positions in several of the company's overseas operations. In his current post, he is responsible for all operating divisions of the company, with sales in excess of $4 billion. Before assuming his present position, Mr. Solso was vice president and general manager of Cummins' engine business, a unit with sales of over $2.7 billion.
 Mr. Solso serves on the boards of the Cummins Engine Foundation, the Heritage Fund of Bartholomew County and the Otter Creek Golf Course. His previous board memberships include Kirloskar Cummins Ltd. (India); Dampers Iberica, SA (Spain); Holset Engineering Co. Ltd. (the UK-past Chairman); and the Onan Corporation (past Chairman).
 AMAX Inc. is a worldwide supplier of metals and energy. Its principal businesses are aluminum, coal, oil and natural gas, molybdenum and other metals.
