AMATEUR SLEUTH SQUAWKS TO GLENDALE POLICE : 2 MEN HELD AS SUSPECTS IN SNATCHING OF RARE BEAKED PET.

Byline: Lee Condon Daily News Staff Writer

Glendale police Wednesday credited an amateur Ace Ventura with breaking a case involving a valuable and rare bird that had been stolen from a Glendale Galleria The Glendale Galleria is a large 3 story regional shopping mall located in Glendale, Los Angeles County, California. It is the second largest mall in Los Angeles County. It is located in Downtown Glendale.  pet store.

After getting a tip from an observant pet store owner in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. , police late Tuesday arrested two men suspected of birdnapping.

The store owner deduced it was no coincidence that one of her customers had no idea what to feed his new toucan toucan (tkăn`, t`kän), perching bird of the New World tropics, related to the woodpeckers.  and that she had received a call Sunday about a missing toucan at the Galleria.

``Toucans aren't common. If you're going to spend that much money on a bird, you'll know what to feed it,'' said the store owner, who asked that her name not be used because of her fear of retaliation RETALIATION. For example, if a nation should lay a very heavy tariff on American goods, the United States would be justified in return in laying heavy duties on the manufactures and  by the suspects.

``He said he hadn't fed it in two weeks. We figured out the bird would have been dead if he didn't feed it for two weeks.''

At that point the pet store owner sent one of her clerks outside to take down the customer's license plate number. The store owner phoned in the tip to Glendale police, and within hours police had taken two suspects, the toucan, eight other birds and two iguanas into custody.

Chahe Keuroghelian, a spokesman for the Glendale Police Department, said police arrested Martin Salgado, 30, and Edgar Cardena, 29, of Silver Lake on suspicion of grand theft after securing a search warrant for Salgado's home.

The toucan is worth about $5,000, Keuroghelian said. The bird is a pet owned by the operator of Dinosaur Experience, a store in the Glendale Galleria.
