AMA Statement on Maryland's lawsuit against tobacco companies.


CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 20, 1995--The following is a statement by Dr. Randolph D. Smoak Jr., trustee of the American Medical Association American Medical Association (AMA), professional physicians' organization (founded 1847). Its goals are to protect the interests of American physicians, advance public health, and support the growth of medical science. .

 support the state of Maryland's lawsuit against the tobacco companies. These companies have enjoyed billions of dollars in profits, while millions of their customers have gotten sick and died from the horrible diseases they cause. In one year alone, diseases linked to smoking kill more than 450,000 Americans.

"If the tobacco companies actively dilute the health message about tobacco and they refuse to admit that their products are deadly, it seems appropriate that they pay for the pain and suffering they cause. In addition, with increasing pressure on state's Medicaid budgets, it's become abundantly clear that the tobacco companies must shoulder the financial burden of their carnage. It would be a tragedy if we let these companies continue to profit at their customers' expense.
