ALi Pentium Chipsets to Support Enhanced Memory PC-133 ESDRAM DIMM Modules.COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 12, 1998--Acer Laboratories Inc. (ALi) and Enhanced Memory Systems, Inc. have jointly announced that future ALi Pentium chipsets will support ESDRAM ESDRAM Enhanced Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory ESDRAM Enhanced Synchronous Dynamic Ram running at 100 and 133 MHz bus speeds. ALi's chipset products will support the Intel Pentium-II microprocessors with 133 MHz local bus speed and PC-133 ESDRAM modules from Enhanced Memory Systems. "We will support Enhanced Memory Systems to develop the PC-133 ESDRAM for main memory," explains C.L. Tsai, R&D vice president of Acer Labs. "We are convinced that the market is looking for an evolutionary, high performance memory solution that does not preclude today's low cost SDRAM (Synchronous DRAM) A type of dynamic RAM (DRAM) memory chip that has been widely used since the late 1990s. SDRAM chips eliminated wait states by dividing the chip into two cell blocks and interleaving data between them. . The JEDEC The division of the Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA) that deals with semiconductor standards (officially, the JEDEC Solid State Technology Association of EIA). JEDEC was formed in 1958 when the Joint Electron Tube Engineering Council (JETEC) split into two Joint Electron Device approved ESDRAM Superset A group of commands or functions that exceed the capabilities of the original specification. Software or hardware components designed for the original specification will also operate with the superset product. However, components designed for the superset will not work with the original. provides a higher performance option in the same socket as today's low cost PC-66 and PC-100 SDRAM." "We are excited that ALi will support our ESDRAM in their next-generation Pentium chipsets," commented Craig Rhodine, vice president and general manager of Enhanced. "Our current ESDRAM demonstrates the performance potential of faster PC-133 main memory. Our next generation 64-Mbit ESDRAM will provide the density required for mainstream PC applications." ESDRAM Products Enhanced began shipping its high performance 4MB EDRAM (1) (Enhanced DRAM) A high-speed DRAM chip developed by Ramtron International Corporation, Colorado Springs, CO. It allowed overlap of a read at the trailing end of a write operation to obtain its speed. product in 1992 and announced the development of an advanced 133 MHz synchronous ESDRAM in November 1996. Enhanced has five patents awarded or approved in the U.S., Europe, and Japan covering the key architecture and method of operation that allows the EDRAM and ESDRAM to achieve industry-leading performance. Enhanced has additional patent applications pending that relate to this technology. "ESDRAM technology is a very effective solution to the memory bandwidth issues now plaguing the performance of computing systems," Rhodine added. "ESDRAM opens the memory-to-processor bottleneck, allowing today's fastest microprocessors to run at optimum performance levels." Enhanced has ESDRAM manufacturing agreements with Siemens Semiconductors and IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) Electronics, and is pursuing other strategic partnerships to advance its ESDRAM technology in the marketplace. EDRAM and ESDRAM products serve in the DRAM, specialty DRAM and fast SRAM See static RAM. SRAM - static random-access memory markets, which are expected to grow to more than $56 billion by the Year 2001, according to In-Stat, a leading semiconductor research firm. Ramtron/Enhanced Memory Systems, Inc. Enhanced Memory Systems develops and markets patented EDRAM(R) high performance specialty memories that combine fast DRAM and SRAM on one chip.
