) and Acer Laboratories Inc. (ALi) today announced CyberBlade Aladdin i1 their new 3D/DVD integrated chipset for mobile PCs featuring Trident's CyberBlade 3D/DVD video graphics and ALi's Aladdin Slot1/Socket 370 Northbridge. With the industry's best power management and extensive integration, this chipset supports all Pentium(TM) II, Pentium III and Celeron(TM) CPUs, providing notebook PC manufacturers with unprecedented price/performance advantages. This mobile chipset includes the CyberBlade Aladdin i1 (M1632M) 3D/DVD Graphics with Intel Slot 1-licensed Northbridge and ALi's M1535 Mobile Southbridge. The chipset is targeted at the value and mainstream notebook market segments.

"Our research indicates the integrated graphics/Northbridge controllers have taken over the entry level of the Value PC market segment and are rapidly gaining market share on the remaining segments, accounting for a third of all computer shipments today," said Dr. Jon Peddie, president of Jon Peddie Associates in Mill Valley, the leading market research firm tracking digital media. "Trident and ALi," added Peddie, "offer a powerful combination of price and performance and we expect them to do very well in this market."

The CyberBlade Aladdin i1 supports Shared Memory Architecture In computer architecture, Shared Memory Architecture (SMA) refers to a design where the graphics chip does not have its own dedicated memory, and instead shares the main system RAM with the CPU and other components.  (SMA (1) See SMA connector.

"Trident continues to innovate in high performance, low power, integrated 3D/northbridge products for notebook PCs," said Dr. Gerry Liu, president of the videographics/communications business unit of Trident Microsystems. "The CyberBlade Aladdin i1 enables superior 3D performance and quality for mainstream/value/thin and light notebook PCs."

ALi's proven M1535 Southbridge completes the chipset offering, providing superior system features and power management for mobile PCs. The M1535 integrates AC-Link Host Controller, Hardware SoundBlaster Pro/16 compatibility, Host Signal Processing Host Signal Processing (HSP) is a term used in computing to describe hardware such as a modem which is emulated (to various degrees) in software.  (HSP) software modem interface, ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) A power management specification developed by Intel, Toshiba and Microsoft that makes hardware status information available to the operating system.  support, green function, 2-channel dedicated Ultra 66 IDE master controller, 4 USB ports, Super I/O controller and advanced Power Management Unit. "The CyberBlade Aladdin i1 brings a new and all-encompassing alternative to mobile PC manufacturers," commented Nancy Hartsoch, Vice President of Marketing and COO of ALi. "It provides not only a fully-licensed Slot 1/Socket 370 high performance and cost-efficient chipset, but also the finest power management capability available. It's a new level of functionality not available before."

The CyberBlade Aladdin i1 is a joint development between ALi and Trident. The companies will co-market and co-support the devices that ALi will manufacture and Trident will sell in the mobile market. The CyberBlade Aladdin i1 (M1632M) is sampling now and will be available in production in May 2000. The M1535 Southbridge is in production today. In 10K quantities this chipset is priced around $40.
