ALVAREZ DRILLED IN LAME GAME BLOWOUT ENDS HOMESTAND ON SOUR NOTE ATLANTA 10, DODGERS 1.

Byline: Jill Painter Staff Writer

Not even a dramatic home run from Shawn Green Shawn David Green (born November 10, 1972, in Des Plaines, Illinois) is a 6' 4" left-handed Major League Baseball player. Green is the starting right fielder for the New York Mets.[1]

Green was a 1st round draft pick, and has been a two-time major league All-Star.
or Adrian Beltre would have made a dent in this game, that's how bad it was. The Dodgers spotted Atlanta 19 hits, an eight-run second inning and the ability to play on cruise control See adaptive cruise control.  all afternoon.

Wilson Alvarez
Wilson Eduardo Alvarez Fuenmayor (born March 24, 1970 in Maracaibo, Zulia State, Venezuela) is a former Major League Baseball left-handed pitcher who played in 13 seasons for the Texas Rangers (1989), Chicago White Sox (1991–1997), San Francisco Giants (1997), Tampa
, a normally reliable starter, was tagged for seven runs on eight hits and couldn't get out of the second inning. He was yanked after 1 2/3 innings and the Braves routed the Dodgers 10-1 in front of 49,513 on Sunday at Dodger Stadium     [ .

The Dodgers, who have a 4 1/2-game lead in the National League West, went 3-4 on the homestand against Florida and Atlanta. And now there's a 13-game road trip, with no off days, that begins today in Montreal and ends with the St. Louis Cardinals For the National Football League team that played in St. Louis from 1960 to 1987, see .
The St. Louis Cardinals (also referred to as "the Cards" or "the Redbirds") are a professional baseball team based in St. Louis, Missouri.

``Today was just one of those days,'' Dodgers manager Jim Tracy

said. ``We had a bad inning in the second inning and it snowballed and got worse. It wasn't a great homestand but it wasn't a bad one, either.''

It certainly wasn't a good one, especially for closer Eric Gagne, who blew a save, took a loss and nearly blew another game but was saved by two home runs from Beltre on Friday.

``Everyone's trying to overanalyze everything but I was just bad for three days,'' Gagne said.

Gagne is from Montreal and he'll be surrounded by family and friends starting today. Perhaps that will get him out of his funk. Brent Mayne Brent Danem Mayne (born April 19, 1968 in Loma Linda, California) is a former Major League Baseball catcher who has played with the Kansas City Royals (1990-95), New York Mets (1996), Oakland Athletics (1997), San Francisco Giants (1998-99), Colorado Rockies (2000-01), Kansas City  has been in a funk too as he went 0 for 14 on the homestand.

It was also unpleasant for Alvarez, who has seven wins.

``Alvarez has pitched lights out all season,'' Atlanta manager Bobby Cox
Bobby Cox (born May 21 1941 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA) is the current and longtime manager of the Atlanta Braves, and a former third baseman in Major League Baseball. He first led the Braves from 1978 to 1981, and then managed the Toronto Blue Jays from 1982 to 1985.
said. ``Today was just one of those days.''

It's always one of those days against the Braves. Alvarez has an 11.50 ERA in five appearances against Atlanta. He seemed unable to get anyone out, not even pitcher Jaret Wright Jaret Samuel Wright (born December 29, 1975 in Anaheim, California) is a starting pitcher in Major League Baseball who currently is a free agent. He is the son of former major league pitcher Clyde Wright. He attended Katella High School. . Alvarez said he knew he didn't have his fastball in an at-bat in which he got Chipper Jones Larry Wayne "Chipper" Jones, Jr. (born April 24, 1972, in DeLand, Florida), is an American Major League baseball player. Although initially a shortstop, Chipper has spent most of his career as the starting third baseman for the Atlanta Braves.  to fly out to left in the first.

``Today I can't locate my fastball,'' Alvarez said. ``Every time I throw a fastball it's a ball. The only thing I can throw for a strike is my offspeed and they were sitting on it.''

Atlanta batted around in the second and Alvarez was pulled in favor of Elmer Dessens Elmer Dessens Jusaino [deh-SENZ] (born January 13, 1971 in Hermosillo, Mexico) is a pitcher on the Colorado Rockies. He bats and throws right handed. He is 5 feet, 11 inches tall and weighs 200 pounds. His 2007 salary is $1.7 million. His pitching speed can reach 90-93 mph. , acquired in a trade with Arizona on Thursday. But Dessens, who made his debut as a Dodger, didn't provide immediate relief. Jones, the first batter he faced, hit a three-run homer to right-center field for the eight-run deficit.

But Dessens settled down and allowed one run on three hits in 3 2/3 innings.

The Dodgers hadn't been drilled like this since nearly two months ago, when they were routed by the Angels 13-0 on June 25. Sunday's fiasco was just the third time this season the Dodgers allowed 10 or more runs. The Dodgers had never allowed eight runs or eight hits in an inning until Sunday.

``It's better to lose like this,'' Green said. ``In some ways, it's not as tough of a loss. It's baseball and it's going to happen.''

Atlanta's Andruw Jones Andruw Rudolf Jones (born April 23, 1977 in Willemstad, Netherlands Antilles) is a baseball player who will be a free agent after the World Series. From 1996 until 2007, Jones played for the Atlanta Braves, a Major League Baseball franchise.  - out with back spasms from Saturday's catch at the wall - didn't play but Marcus Giles, J.D. Drew, Eli Marrero all had three hits. Even 45-year-old Julio Franco had three hits.

The Dodgers had just five hits, all singles. A sign of the frustration? Tim Wallach, the Dodgers' hitting coach, was ejected in the fifth inning for arguing balls and strikes.

Starter Jose Lima said he wouldn't be able to do much talking - a rarity - on the Sunday evening flight to Montreal. That didn't prevent the talkative Lima from chatting in the clubhouse about returning to Los Angeles with a big lead.

``I'm greedy,'' he said. ``I don't want to be up just five or six games. I want to be 10 up, then we'll have a real secure spot in October.''

Atlanta's Wright, who was tagged in his previous start, retired the first 12 batters he faced on Sunday until Beltre singled to lead off the fifth inning. Wright allowed just three hits and one earned run through seven innings.
