Total Trash Out is intended as a fun and easy way for schools to make money while their students learn about recycling recycling, the process of recovering and reusing waste products—from household use, manufacturing, agriculture, and business—and thereby reducing their burden on the environment.  at the same time. The drive was started by AV Rubbish owner Phil Arklin and his company in 1993 and has now been continued by Waste Management of Antelope Valley.

All schools are paid $1 per pound for their cans with the money going directly to the schools. During the past 11 years, $250,000 was given to the schools to help pay for such educational extras as athletic equipment, playground equipment and field trips.

To cheer the schools on and talk about recycling, Waste Management presents assemblies featuring its robot named Cycler. This year Cycler will visit 10 schools with the assistance of Aqua Dog from the Palmdale Water District.

In addition to the money, each winning school will receive a computer sponsored by Amblix Technologies and a party complete with two air bounces, a pony ride, petting zoo, and games and prizes.

The class that collects the most cans from each school will be treated to a party sponsored by Funland USA.
