This new Altiris solution helps system administrators protect desired PC configurations and increase system stability in multi-user environments, such as schools and libraries, by maintaining unique system and software configurations across user sessions.

Altiris Protect creates a user-specific, portable and persistent software configuration to provide users with a consistent computing experience, regardless of PC, for maximum flexibility and productivity. Altiris Protect also helps reduce the maintenance and added cost of shared-PC environments that are particularly vulnerable to software configuration corruption and application conflict.

* Files that are saved, changed or deleted by the user are captured and contained locally or on the network by Altiris Protect. Deleted or changed original configuration files are automatically restored and new files are removed at the end of the user session.

In addition, Altiris Protect now supports double-byte character sets and simplified domain and Active Directory user configurations. Protect is the first Altiris solution to leverage this software control technology and deliver application virtualization required by the adaptive enterprise. Altiris patent-pending File System Layer technology buffers user-specific applications from the underlying system configuration to enable this groundbreaking capability.

Altiris File System Layer technology keeps track of a software application's file system and registry footprint. Each File System Layer can contain an entire application or other collections of files and data. These software layers can be deleted, archived, migrated to other machines and restored with user preferences and data, all without touching the underlying Windows installation.
