Demos and Hear Lectures on DO-178B at ESC in San Francisco March 8-10 2005

ALT Software is very pleased to announce that it has been selected as a Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing (CWCEC CWCEC - Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing) product partner to market DO-178B Level A certifiable
1. That can or must be certified. Used of infectious, industrial, and other diseases that are required by law to be reported to health authorities.
2. Relating to or being a person showing disordered behavior of sufficient gravity to justify involuntary mental hospitalization.
OpenGL (OPEN Graphics Language) A 3D graphics language developed by SGI, which has become a de facto standard supported in Unix, Windows and Macintosh computers. OpenGL can be implemented as an extension to an operating system or to a windowing system such as X Window. All high-end 3D display adapters include OpenGL drivers. OpenGL and Direct3D (Microsoft's DirectX) are the major 3D graphics languages in use today. See OPC and Cg. The display adapter's primary purpose is to continuously convert the graphic patterns (bitmaps) in memory frame buffers into signals for the monitor's screen. However, high-end adapters do a whole lot more. They move the image through a graphics pipeline adding texture and 2D and 3D effects, all functions that used to be done by the computer's CPU.
 product line.

ALT's DO-178B Level A certifiable OpenGL driver is specifically tailored to achieve high performance on CWCEC's INSIGHTS graphics line and fulfills the requirements of the strictest level of criticality (Level A) described in the DO-178B standard. CWCEC has used ALT's software successfully in past projects and chose ALT as a partner to ensure that joint customers have access to the most advanced features and performance available in rugged COTS graphics PCI Mezzanine Cards (PMCs) available today.

The combination of ALT DO-178B Level A certifiable OpenGL software and CWCEC's PMC-704 and PMC-706 graphics and video controller PMCs provides avionics customers with a solution that frees them from the high cost and risk of developing their own in-house solutions.

"The defense and aerospace industry has traditionally relied on expensive proprietary designs, but embedded developers are increasingly embracing COTS solutions to reduce development costs and shorten product development times," said Lynn Patterson, CWCEC's Vice-President, Modular Solutions. "ALT Software drivers are the OpenGL graphics drivers of choice for the highly demanding DO-178B Level A environment; they enable rapid and cost-effective development, deployment and maintenance of safety-critical systems."

"ALT has spent many years working with countless avionic applications and therefore understands the DO-178 certification process, stability requirements, future demands and specific functionality required by our avionic customers," said Chris Brady, President of ALT Software. "ALT's expertise in graphics and CWCEC's category-leading PMC cards let us together offer a high-quality, readily available, DO-178B solution that will reduce our customer's time to market and development costs."

CWCEC's INSIGHTS product line is comprised of high-performance, feature-rich graphics PMCs (IEEE 1386.1 compliant) that provide customers with a platform for synthetic graphics and digital or analog video capture and overlay. These products are ideal for use in technology upgrades and new designs for avionics, ground and naval applications. Combined with ALT Software's OpenGL graphics drivers, CWCEC's PMC-704 and PMC-706 products are ideal for glass cockpits, helmet-mounted display systems, moving map systems and other high-reliability avionics applications.

ALT has been invited to lecture on "Safety Critical OpenGL ES: 'Beyond Avionics'" at the Khronos Group Developer's University on Thursday March 10, 2005, 2:15 PM - 2:55 PM, at "mezzanine," located at 444 Jessie at Mint, San Francisco. ALT recognizes the need to stay on the forefront of emerging technology in the embedded markets, is a member of the Khronos Group and contributes to the development of the OpenGL ES API specification. A description of the ALT session and demo is at: http://www.khronos.org/devu/locations/sanfrancisco2005.html.

About ALT's DO-178B Level A products

ALT's DO-178B Level A certifiable OpenGL graphics drivers were designed from the ground up for mission-critical applications that rely on security, determinism and testability. The major modules that constitute the driver "plug-in" to each other to build the system configuration. These modules are divided into categories including windowing and software utilities, graphic hardware, operating system, video I/O, extended debugging and BIT. This modular architecture makes it simple and straightforward for ALT to evolve the driver software to support the latest graphics and communication technologies while continuing to adhere to the strict guidelines of DO-178B. The result is a highly optimized and performant software binary for the target system configuration. ALT's DO-178B OpenGL subset is a superset of the Khronos Group's Safety Critical subset. The DO-178B Package includes full source code and a Certification Kit containing the complete Level A test harness as well as all documentation and artifacts required for certification.
