ALSTOM Wins Order for Propulsion Equipment from CAF.

Alsen, island, 121 sq mi (313 sq km), Sønderjylland co., S Denmark, in the Lille Bælt, separated from the mainland by the narrow Alensund. ) has signed a contract to supply propulsion systems and auxiliary inverters for up to 54 light rail vehicles being manufactured by CAF for the Sacramento Regional Transit District The Sacramento Regional Transit District, commonly referred to as the RT, is the agency responsible for public transportation in the Sacramento, California area. A It was established on April 1, 1973, as a result of the acquisition of the Sacramento Transit Authority.  (RT).

The base contract provides for 24 cars, with an option for an additional 16 to be verified by May 2000. Options for another 14 cars may be exercised within 635 days of the Notice to Proceed.

RT needs the new cars to accommodate planned extensions of the light rail system to the city of Folsom, the Sacramento Amtrak Amtrak, the National Railroad Passenger Corp., authorized to operate virtually all intercity passenger railroad routes in the United States. Amtrak was created by Congress in 1970 in response to more than two decades of continuous operating deficits by privately run  station, and Meadowview Road in South Sacramento.

The high-floor light rail vehicles will be fitted with ALSTOM's ONIX 800 traction motors and CARA auxiliary inverters. ONIX systems use advanced Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) technology, which brings the benefits of low volume and weight, low noise operation, excellent reliability and reduction in maintenance costs and energy consumption.
