ALSTOM Awarded Follow-On Order For Amtrak Double-Deck Train.

:ALS) has been awarded an order worth more than $14 million to supply the National Railroad Passenger Corporation (Amtrak Amtrak, the National Railroad Passenger Corp., authorized to operate virtually all intercity passenger railroad routes in the United States. Amtrak was created by Congress in 1970 in response to more than two decades of continuous operating deficits by privately run ) with six double-deck intercity coaches.

This order represents the first option exercised by Amtrak under a contract signed with ALSTOM in February 1998. That base contract, worth $100 million, provided for eight five-car double-deck trainsets. The new trains will enter service on the San Diegan corridor which serves major cities in Southern California and the Central Coast.

The contract was awarded as part of a larger modernization program being carried out by Amtrak and the California Department of Transportation The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is a government agency in the U.S. state of California. Its mission is to improve mobility across the state. It manages the state highway system and is actively involved with public transportation systems in California.  (Caltrans). The trains, which will replace 30 year-old single deck rolling stock, will increase operating efficiency on the line and provide rail passengers with a modern, comfortable and safe means of transport See: mode of transport. . The trainsets will be push/pulled by locomotives supplied by General Motors, and will include one Custom Class car, two Coach Cars, one Coach/Cafe Car, and one Cab/Baggage/Coach car. The six option cars include one each of the Coach, Custom and Cafe/Coach Cars, plus three additional Cab/Baggage/Coach cars.

The cars will be equipped with comfortable, reclining seats; panoramic windows, a digital passenger information system; computer connection points; ample luggage space; and restaurant facilities. Each car complies fully with ADA requirements, allowing easy access for passengers with reduced mobility.

The stainless steel carbody shells will be manufactured at ALSTOM's plant in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and then shipped to the company's facility in Hornell, New York Hornell is a city in Steuben County, New York, United States. The population was 9,019 at the 2000 census. The city is named after the Hornell family, early settlers. Its current population is mainly made up of Irish Americans and Italian Americans.  for final assembly.

This latest order further strengthens ALSTOM's position in North America and follows orders for commuter coaches for New Jersey Transit Corporation, and for propulsion equipment destined des·tine
