ALR LAUNCHES POWERPRO 486DX2/50 PRODUCT LINE

Intel's Clock Doubler Chip and New Integrated Cache CPU Modules Provide

a Boost to File Server, Multiuser Host and High-End Workstation Markets
IRVINE, Calif., April 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Advanced Logic Research Inc. (NASDAQ: AALR) today announced the ALR POWERPRO 486DX2/50, with Intel Corp's new clock doubler chip, the 486DX2/50.
Providing powerful 50-MHz performance while still using 25-MHz support chips, ALR sees its new product line as a real boost to the medium to high-end file server, multiuser host and/or high-end workstation markets.
With an aggressive starting price of $5,295, just $300 more than its high-end POWERPRO 486/33, Vice President of Marketing Dave Kirkey believes the POWERPRO 486DX2/50 will appeal to a broad spectrum of compute-intensive users in mid-sized workgroups who need faster performance at lower costs.
"ALR remains committed to its mandate of offering quality products that incorporate today's newest technology with tomorrow's upgradeability at cost-effective prices," Kirkey stated.
The POWERPRO 486DX2/50 is available in three models -- the 5CV with integrated IDE and floppy interface, at $5,295; the 340-5CVS with 340-MB SCSI hard drive and 32-bit SCSI controller, at $6,995; and the 535-5CVS with 535-MB SCSI hard drive and 32-bit SCSI controller, at $7,495.
The EISA-based POWERPRO 486DX2/50 systems, designed around Intel's 486DX2/50 CPU, have an internal RAM cache of 8-KB and math coprocessor. The systems also use the newly designed CPU module with 256-KB of integrated read/write-back cache RAM for increased system performance.
Dual processing is supported using ALR proprietary i486DX/50-MHz modules, each with 512-KB read/write-back cache RAM for a total of 1-MB. Standard 5-MB RAM is expandable to 49-MB on a single 12-slot system board. The POWERPRO EISA Memory Expansion Modules expands the RAM to 305-MB.
The systems will be available for shipment to authorized resellers in early May with a 12-month optional on-site and extended warranty available. ALR's BUY-BACK incentive program provides rebates toward upgrade systems to higher performance CPU modules or to dual processing.
Additionally, ALR has incorporated the new integrated cache design on the POWERPRO i486DX/50 modules and have aggressively repositioned the price points on these systems. The new systems will consist of the same models as above 486DX2/50s and will have prices starting at $5,595, $7,295 and $7,795 respectively.
ALR also announced two new additions to the award-winning BusinessVEISA Series. Similar to the POWERPRO, these two systems are based on Intel's i486DX/50 and Intel486DX2/50 microprocessors. The CPU modules incorporate an innovative, new design that integrates a 256-KB read and write-back caching scheme. Each product will include four models ranging from a basic reseller-oriented system (Model 101-3), to fully configured, ready to run models, complete with 5-MB of RAM, 120- or 200-MB IDE hard drives and 1-MB SVGA video adapters providing 1024 x 768 resolution in 256 colors.
Both the POWERPRO and BusinessVEISA will be displayed in Chicago, McCormick Place, Comdex/Windows World, Intel booth No. W-1929.
