), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Gateway 2000, Thursday announced at the Breakaway XChange Conference its entry into the portable computing arena with two new notebook computers, the ALR Evolution LT 2000 and ALR Evolution LT 9000.

As a result of its acquisition by Gateway 2000, industry leader ALR, for the first time, is offering end-users custom-configured notebook computers through value-added resellers (VARs) and distribution channels.

The ALR Evolution LT 2000 and ALR Evolution LT 9000 feature-rich notebook computers, offering support for Intel's latest mobile processor, the 233-MHz Pentium processor with MMX technology, are designed for the more advanced demands of corporate users. Numerous processor, storage, and connectivity options give users the ability to customize their notebook configurations to specific mobile computing requirements.

ALR's indirect channel relationships coupled with build-to-order capabilities offer a powerful combination. Through custom integration services and advanced logistic capabilities, channel partners can customize individual portable systems. Manufacturing efficiencies and component cost savings achieved in the merger also allow ALR to deliver great value through aggressively priced enterprise-level systems.

"ALR now offers a full range of personalized solutions, from our award-winning advanced servers, corporate desktops, and now, notebook computers, that focus exclusively on the specific needs of individual users," said Gene Lu, president of ALR and vice president and officer of Gateway 2000. "Working with our channel partners, we're extending our build-to-order approach to notebook computers. The potential exists that no two notebook systems will have the same features and options, but instead will be personally customized to suit customer requirements."

Additionally, ALR's value-added resellers now have the capability to provide their customers with a total corporate solution -- from notebook computers and corporate desktops to enterprise server systems.

"Many of the corporate customers we're selling servers to want client and mobile units as well," said John J. Mirdo, president of CompuTeam of Colton, Calif. "ALR's approach to the new ALR Evolution LT series notebooks lets us provide the value-add for our customers. Being close to our customers and understanding how they're using their computers lets us make recommendations to the features and options that make them more productive."

ALR Evolution LT 2000 Notebook -- Perfect for the Mobile Professional

ALR's new Evolution LT 2000 multimedia notebook is the ideal entry-level portable computer for today's corporate, government and academic users. Offering users a broad selection of processing power, the ALR Evolution LT 2000 supports the 133-MHz Pentium processor and the 166-, 200- and 233-MHz Pentium processor with MMX technology.

With a selling price starting at $2,267(a)(U.S.), the ALR Evolution LT 2000 features a 133-MHz Pentium processor, Intel's TX430 core logic chip set, 2-GB EIDE (Enhanced IDE) An extension to the IDE interface that supports the ATA-2 and ATAPI standards. ATA-2 (Fast ATA) provides faster transfer rates (see IDE for details) and allows for multiple channels, each connecting two devices.  removable hard drive and 16-MB SDRAM (Synchronous DRAM) A type of dynamic RAM (DRAM) memory chip that has been widely used since the late 1990s. It has a 12.1-inch SVGA (Super VGA) A screen resolution of 800x600 pixels. Third-party vendors extended IBM's VGA display standard and were the first to use the term. SVGA has also referred to 1,024x768 resolutions. ALR Evolution LT 9000 -- Delivers Desktop Performance in a Portable Package

Designed to deliver high performance as a stand-alone PC, the ALR Evolution LT 9000 offering support for the 166-, 200- and 233-MHz Pentium processor with MMX technology, has several high-end features that set it apart from most current notebooks. These standard features include a 13.3-inch XGA (EXtended Graphics Array) A screen resolution of 1,024x768 pixels. The term stems from IBM's XGA display standard introduced in 1990, which extended VGA to 132-column text and interlaced 1,024x768x256 resolution. XGA-2 later added non-interlaced 1,024x768x64K.  TFT active matrix display (hardware) active matrix display - A type of liquid crystal display where each display element (each pixel) includes an active component such as a transistor to maintain its state between scans.

), a 2-GB hard drive and 16-MB of SDRAM (expandable to 192-MB) with 4-MB EDO Video RAM. In addition, this notebook comes equipped with a 12-cell, Lithium Ion battery pack for extended life. The modular option bay is also capable of supporting a second 12-cell battery pack.

The ALR Evolution LT 9000, ideal on a desktop or remote office location, redefines the high-end notebook category through unsurpassed modularity and numerous options, enabling users to custom build the high-end notebook exactly suited to their needs.

Shared Components

To help lower the total cost of ownership and maximize technology investments, the ALR Evolution LT 2000 and ALR Evolution LT 9000 offer shared components that are interchangeable between the two units. The shared components include memory modules, 12.7 mm hard disk drives, battery packs, AC adapters, auto/airline adapters and docking stations.
