) is the Revolution Q-2SMP (Symmetric MultiProcessing) A multiprocessing architecture in which multiple CPUs, residing in one cabinet, share the same memory. SMP systems provide scalability. As business increases, additional CPUs can be added to absorb the increased transaction volume. , a competitively-priced server designed for the cost-conscious buyer with high-performance needs typical in enterprise-computing businesses.

This system and its forerunner (the Revolution Q-SMP, now dubbed the Q-4SMP) compete directly with the Compaq Proliant 2000 and 4000 series.

The Revolution Q-2SMP server (dual-Pentium processor-capable), designed by ALR yields a price advantage of up to $3,500 at SRP SRP - A data link layer protocol.  when comparing fully configured models to the Compaq Proliant 2000. The Revolution Q-4SMP server (quad-Pentium processor-capable) delivers a variable of up to $8,639 to the Compaq Proliant 4000 when fully configured.

Dave Kirkey, vice president of worldwide sales and marketing at ALR states, "PC servers are what businesses want right now and ALR is well positioned to deliver a true server system to our customers. We are able to do this with the Revolution Q-2SMP and Q-4SMP series which offer a multitude of fault-tolerant features at very aggressive price points."

The Revolution Q-4SMP with the same feature base (except using four 100-MHz Pentium processors, 64-MB RAM and 4-GB array) can be purchased for $27,397 while the Compaq Proliant 4000 with the equivalent feature set is available at $36,036.

"People naturally compare the Q-SMP to Compaq's Proliant systems. This is a comparison we encourage them to make because it further highlights the Q-SMP's technological and financial advantages," says Kirkey.

New on the Revolution Q-2SMP and Q-4SMP families are ALR's "Quick Hot-Swap" options. Kits will consist of a six drive bay rack with a 1-GB SCSI SCSI

(2-GB also available) removable hard drive (requires ALR 1 or 3 channel SCSI-2 RAID Caching Controller). Up to two of these kits can be implemented in the Revolution Q-SMP totaling twelve hot swappable drive bays. Supporting RAID levels 0, 1 and 5, ALR's "Quick Hot-Swap" solution provides fault tolerance and continuous on-line access for mission critical environments where computer system downtime and data loss are unacceptable risks. Quick Hot-Swap Kits start at $1,295 and will be available in December.

Also available as an option are newly enhanced CPU CPU

modules now with 512-KB of two-way set associative cache (architecture) set associative cache - A compromise between a direct mapped cache and a fully associative cache where each address is mapped to a certain set of cache locations. . The additional 256-KB of cache will help in areas such as transaction processing (i.e. database server) or any environments where large amounts of data are being moved. Prices for the new 512-KB CPU modules are $3,595 and $4,095 for the 90- and 100-MHz Pentium processors, respectively, and will be available in December.

This new class of servers provides a total of 10 EISA (Extended ISA) Pronounced "ee-suh." A PC bus standard that extends the 16-bit ISA bus (AT bus) to 32 bits and provides bus mastering. ISA cards can plug into an EISA slot.  slots, 6 of which are EISA Bus Mastering and 3 of which have VESA VL local bus extensions. The Revolution Q-SMP family includes ALR NetTune, an advanced NetWare remote server management package. NetTune continuously documents patterns of network activity, anticipates changes, then automatically alters server parameters for optimum performance.

The ALR Revolution Q-2SMP and Q-4SMP ship in a double-tower chassis with a 5-year 36-month warranty. ALR offers the most aggressive service and support program in the industry. System components carry a 5-year warranty and now peripheral parts are warranted for 36 months. Free On-Site service is available for the first year. Additionally, ALR's TechFAX on-line support and bulletin board service (ALR BBS) are available. ALR is listed on the CompuServe forum under the name GO ALR INC.

Historically, ALR has been a strong contender of open system design within the industry. The ALR Revolution series reflects this position by supporting a variety of operating systems including single CPU versions of MS-DOS MS-DOS

, MS-Windows and Novell NetWare, and SMP versions of MS-Windows NT Workstation 3.5, MS-Windows NT Server 3.5, IBM OS/2 for SMP, Banyan VINES SMP, SCO UNIX with MPX, Sun Solaris SMP and soon to be released UnixWare 2.0 (SMP). The system also adheres to the Intel MP Spec v1.1 multiprocessing specification.

The new Q-2SMP and Q-4SMP models are an extension to the award winning ALR Revolution family, (announced in March 1994), incorporating ALR's proprietary QuadFlex SMP modular architecture consisting of an advanced 64-bit multiprocessor bus and an interleaved 64-bit memory design. The Revolution has garnered awards and praise from industry publishers and technical gurus worldwide. In the UK, the ALR Revolution Q-SMP received the Gold Award from PC User Magazine. The system is now a finalist for the 1994 MVP (Multimedia Video Processor) A high-speed DSP chip from Texas Instruments, introduced in 1994. Officially introduced as the TMS320C80, it combines RISC technology with the functionality of four DSPs on one chip.  (Most Valuable Product) award from PC/Computing.

Customers can enter the Revolution server market for under $6,000. Base configurations for the Revolution Q-2SMP start at $5,995 and the Revolution Q-4SMP can be purchased for $6,495. All models will be available in December '94 through a worldwide network of ALR resellers.

The new Revolution Q-SMP servers will be on display at Comdex/Fall '94 in Las Vegas, Nevada in booth No. L4344.
