  • Del Mar Racetrack, located in Del Mar, California
race that has sent four of its past seven winners on to year-end Eclipse Awards for fillies and mares on turf, will be run today without a championship contender.

Instead, it will give one of last year's contenders a good chance to get back on the winning track.

Her opponents include Richard Mandella-trained Matiara, also in an 0-for-3 slump; Radu Cool, who upset Alpride in an allowance race last month; and Angel in My Heart, the Bobby Frankel trainee who has been first or second in five of six U.S. starts.

``I've been reading about Mandella's filly, about how she's been training well,'' McAnally said. ``But I think our filly will run well.''

A victory in today's Grade I race would put Alpride's career earnings over $1 million. She has won 11 of 20 starts.

McAnally is seeking his fourth Ramona, having won it with Luz del Sol in '69, Drama Critic in '78 and Auspiciante in '86. McCarron won the race aboard Flawlessly in '92, '93 and '94. Flawlessly won the Eclipse Award in '92 and '93, as did Ramona winners Brown Bess ('89) and Possibly Perfect ('95).

End of an era: The $1.2 million Hambletonian, the trotting classic that will be shown on Channel 2 at noon today, will undergo a major facelift before next year and will no longer be a test of standardbred Standardbred

In 1997, the Hambletonian eliminations will be contested a week before the final and the heats will be seeded to balance the fields. The top 10 horses will then advance to the final, which also might be run on a different date.

The Hambletonian Society on Friday gave officials at Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford, N.J., the option of moving the race from the first Saturday in August to the second, so the event could coincide with the final day of its harness meet.

The 12 3-year-olds entered this year will have to race in elimination heats today, with the final the same afternoon.

``Standardbreds were always known as such a durable breed in that they could race three or four heats and were so strong,'' said driver John Campbell.
