ALPINE GROUP SUBSIDIARY SIGNS LICENSING AGREEMENT WITH UNIT OF RALSTON PURINA

NEW YORK, June 21 /PRNewswire/ -- The Alpine Group, Inc. (AMEX: AGI) announced today that its Alpine PolyVision, Inc. subsidiary has executed a definitive license and know-how agreement with a unit of Ralston Purina Company (NYSE: RAL) for the development, sale and manufacture of applications of its PolyVision technology for use in materials for certain consumer products. The terms of the license include a license fee to Alpine PolyVision, Inc. plus royalty payments based upon unit product sales.
Steven S. Elbaum, chairman and chief executive officer of Alpine, stated: "This agreement with a major potential user of our PolyVision technology is particularly significant in that the planned commercial applications involve uses other than traditional glass-based flat panel information displays."
Mr. Elbaum added, "Alpine PolyVision's manufacturing facility in Wallingford, Conn. has made substantial progress since the decision was made in mid-1992 to transfer technology and know-how from our Massy, France pilot line and Paris R&D facility to Connecticut. Construction of the Connecticut-based facility began in late December 1992 and installation of substantially all of its production equipment was completed by April 1993. The Connecticut facility staffed up to approximately 20 people by June 1993 and has produced initial sample runs for internal testing and measurement. We expect the sequence of internal testing, customer development and sampling to continue through the end of 1993, with commercial shipments anticipated to begin prior to year end."
The Alpine Group, Inc. is a holding company with continuing operations in information display and defense electronics and datacommunications businesses. Through its Alpine PolyVision, Inc. subsidiary, Alpine is developing PolyVision , a proprietary flat panel display technology, for commercial applications in a wide variety of markets. Alpine's information display activities also include Posterloid Corporation, which manufactures and markets menuboard display systems to fast food and convenience store markets. A wholly-owned subsidiary, DNE Technologies, Inc. (formerly Dataproducts New England, Inc.), specializes in the advanced design, development, and production of datacommunications, avionics, printers and other components and systems for government and commercial markets.
Alpine announced on June 17, 1993 that it has signed a definitive merger agreement with Superior TeleTec, Inc. (AMEX: STT), a telecommunications manufacturing company, in which Superior TeleTec will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Alpine. Alpine also announced the signing of an agreement with minority shareholders of its 71 percent owned Alpine PolyVision subsidiary to exchange approximately 2,164,000 shares of Alpine common stock for approximately 27 percent of Alpine PolyVision owned by the minority shareholders. The transactions are expected to close in the fall.
