Byline: CHRIS COCOLES The Minors

Kurt Birkins Kurt Daniel Birkins (born August 11, 1980 in West Hills, California) is a relief pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles. Birkins made his major league debut on May 4, 2006.

Birkins first pitched at UCLA for one season before taking a year off.

Birkins, a left-handed pitcher, was a 33rd pick in 2000 who has become a draft bargain. In two years at short-season and low-A ball, Birkins is 15-9 with a 3.24 ERA. He was ranked Baltimore's 15th-best prospect by Baseball America and assigned to Single-A Frederick (Md.) in the Carolina League.

His 2003 didn't begin the way Birkins wanted. In four starts, he was hit hard - 17 earned runs and 23 hits in 15 1/3 innings. But the next four were much better (nine runs in 20 2/3 innings).

``I had a couple of rough starts and that did not help my confidence level,'' Birkins told the Frederick News-Post. ``But I knew I was good enough to pitch at this level. I felt I was a better pitcher than that.''

Former Pepperdine College World Series hero Pat Ahearne is hanging on to a career that began in the Detroit organization with four games pitched in the big leagues.
