ALM Completes 4th Month of Successful Subsystems Testing of its Revolutionary Microturbine.Business Editors WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 19, 2001 ALM Turbine, Inc. ("ALM") announced today the completion of four months of intensive testing of its prototype microturbine subsystems at the test facilities of Alturdyne, Inc. in San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay. , CA and East-West Technology Testing Corporation of West Palm Beach, Fl. The tests confirm that ALM has made a number of significant technological breakthroughs in microturbine technology, expected to result in a considerably cleaner and more efficient microturbine than those currently on the market. Revolutionary combustion system - Over 150 successful starts (where no pilot fuel was required) have been performed, including several fast starts from ambient temperature Outside temperature at any given altitude, preferably expressed in degrees centigrade. . In addition to very high flame stability, testing has yielded / verified the following results:
-- NOx emissions of between 5ppm and 10ppm in an open cycle mode without a
catalytic device. Testing the engine in semi-closed mode should reduce NOx
emissions to below 5ppm utilizing exhaust gas recirculation ("EGR").
-- Combustion design proven to completely eliminate numerous fuel injectors,
pilot injectors, and related circumferential hot spots at the combustor exit.
This achievement facilitates lower NOx and eliminates expensive components
found in conventional gas turbines.
-- Combustor premixing device design verification. ALM has demonstrated stable
combustion with a 1:1 flow ratio between compressed air and exhaust gases,
proving that EGR can be used in gas turbines as it has been used in
reciprocating engines.
ALM's novel combustor com·bus·tor n. A combustion chamber and its igniters, injectors, and other related apparatus in a jet engine or gas turbine. A name generally assigned to the combination of flame holder or stabilizer, igniter, combustion chamber, and was optimized with the assistance of Combustion Science & Engineering of Columbia, MD. Novel Blade Cooling Technology - ALM tests have validated that its blade cooling technology possesses fewer losses than conventional blade cooling technologies despite significantly higher cooling flows A cooling flow[1] occurs according to the theory that the intracluster medium (ICM) in the centres of galaxy clusters should be rapidly cooling at the rate of tens to thousands of solar masses per year. . Tests have also demonstrated a considerable reduction of the blade leading edge temperature at fairly high combustor exit temperatures, potentially increasing overall engine efficiency and eliminating the need for exotic and expensive blade materials. Innovative Heat Exchanger heat exchanger Any of several devices that transfer heat from a hot to a cold fluid. In many engineering applications, one fluid needs to be heated and another cooled, a requirement economically accomplished by a heat exchanger. Technology - ALM has successfully built and tested a proprietary recuperator Re`cu´per`a`tor n. 1. (Steel Manuf.) Same as Regenerator. and intercooler in·ter·cool·er n. A device for cooling a fluid between successive heating stages. in ter·cool with demonstrated
effectiveness of between 91-93%.Revolutionary nozzle-less turbine design - ALM has effectively integrated its combustor and first stage turbine, successfully eliminating the first stage nozzle An orifice in an inkjet print head through which ink is sprayed onto the paper. Print heads with six thousand or more nozzles are common in today's printers. Nozzle between the combustor and first stage turbine. This achievement increases overall engine efficiency and eliminates an expensive hot section component. ALM Turbine, Inc is a microturbine technology development and commercialization company. ALM is currently developing a low emission, 37.5% efficient 300kW microturbine for stationary power applications and a 50kW unit for automotive applications. Stationary generation applications include peak shaving, grid support, resource recovery, remote power, standby/back-up, UPS, CHP CHP Chapter CHP Combined Heat and Power CHP California Highway Patrol CHP Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi (Turkish: Republican People's Party) CHP Chemical Hygiene Plan (OSHA) CHP Community Health Plan and base load. ALM currently has 16 patents and patent applications. For more information call 202-778-8538 x135 or email: bmorris@almturbine.com. |
