ALLTEL Awards Three-year Exclusive Contract to CIENA; CIENA's MultiWave Sentry Enables Network Scalability and Protocol Flexibility.


LINTHICUM, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 7, 1999--

CIENA Corporation (Nasdaq:CIEN CIEN Ciena Corporation (stock symbol) ) today announced that ALLTEL has selected and deployed its dense wavelength division multiplexing See WDM.  (DWDM (Dense WDM) The term given to wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) when significantly more channels were being added. Since WDM is increasingly more "dense" all the time, both terms are used synonymously. See WDM.

(the capital of the United States). . ALLTEL's communications operations include local telephone, wireless, long-distance, Internet and paging services.
