ALLEGHANY CORPORATION ELECTS THOMAS S. JOHNSON TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS
 NEW YORK, Nov. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Thomas S. Johnson, the former president of Manufacturers Hanover Trust Co. and Manufacturers Hanover Corporation, has been elected to the board of directors of Alleghany Corporation (NYSE: Y), John J. Burns, Jr., president and chief executive officer of Alleghany, announced today.
 Mr. Johnson, age 51, served as president at Manufacturers Hanover from 1989 until July 1991, when an agreement was announced to merge Manufacturers Hanover with Chemical Bank. From 1983 until 1989, he served as president of Chemical Bank and Chemical Banking Corporation. Previously, he held a variety of other positions at Chemical Bank, and was special assistant to the Comptroller of the U.S. Department of Defense from 1966 until 1969.
 Raised in Racine, Wis., Mr. Johnson graduated from Trinity College with an A.B. in Economics, and earned an M.B.A. degree with Distinction at the Harvard Business School. He taught courses in business management at Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines from 1964 until 1966.
 Mr. Johnson is a member (and former chairman) of the board of directors of the Union Theological Seminary, a trustee of The Institute of International Education, and a member of the boards of directors of R.R. Donnelley & Sons Co., The Prudential Insurance Company of America, Pan Atlantic, Inc., the Asia Society and WNET Channel 13. He is vice president and a board member of the Cancer Research Institute of America, and a member of the Business Committee of the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Mr. Johnson is also a member of the Group of Thirty, Consultative Group on International Economic and Monetary Affairs, and of the Council on Foreign Relations, Inc.
 With consolidated assets of $4.7 billion, Alleghany Corporation is engaged, through its subsidiaries Chicago Title and Trust Company, Sacramento Savings Bank and World Minerals Inc., in the businesses of title insurance, investment management, retail banking and industrial minerals. Alleghany also conducts a steel fastener importing business through its Heads and Threads division.
