ALLEGED GETAWAY DRIVER TURNS SELF IN.

Byline: SUSAN ABRAM and SUE DOYLE Staff Writers

LAKE BALBOA -- A Mission Hills man who allegedly drove away with a slaying suspect in the shooting death of a 17-year-old outside of Birmingham High School turned himself in to police Thursday.

Bruce Williams, 38, walked into the Los Angeles Police Department's Van Nuys division about 3:30 p.m., where authorities interviewed him for his role in Wednesday's shooting, said Fabian Lizarraga, an LAPD patrol captain.

Dazohn Tony Roberts died after being shot several times in the abdomen outside the high school during an afternoon gunfight with a suspect identified as Nanshon Williams, 16, of Van Nuys, who remains at large, police said. Lizarraga said both teens were gang members.

After he was shot, Roberts staggered down Balboa Boulevard and dropped onto the sidewalk in the designated Safe School Zone in the neighborhood. He died later at a local hospital.

Witnesses told police the 16-year-old Williams got inside a black, four-door Acura about two blocks away. The car was impounded late Thursday afternoon.

The elder Williams, who isn't related to Nanshon, is on parole for assault with a deadly weapon. Lizarraga was unsure if the man belonged to a gang.

Neither Roberts nor Nanshon Williams were enrolled in school. Both were armed with guns and fired at each other, police said. A .25-caliber semi-automatic handgun, believed to be Roberts', was found at the scene.

Investigators served search warrants Thursday at both of the Williamses' homes.

Meanwhile, in an early morning meeting with parents and teachers, Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Roy Romer said security would be tighter. Police were seen patrolling the area as school buses and parents dropped off students.

Anyone with information about Nanshon Williams can call the Van Nuys homicide unit at (818) 374-0040.
