ALLEGATIONS OF FLORIDA ATTORNEY GENERAL ARE OUTRAGEOUS,
 SAYS GEORGIA-PACIFIC
ATLANTA, Aug. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- "The allegation of the Florida Attorney General that Georgia-Pacific's plywood and lumber prices have increased 100 percent is absolutely not true, ridiculous and completely unsubstantiated," said A.D. "Pete" Correll, Georgia-Pacific's president and chief operating officer.
"Georgia-Pacific is a producer and a wholesaler -- we are not retailers who sell directly to consumers -- and, further, we have no control over speculators' prices," Correll said.
Random Lengths, a weekly independent newsletter that tracks manufacturers' prices, reported Wednesday that average composite prices for plywood had increased less than 15 percent compared with prices before the hurricane. In addition, Southern yellow pine lumber increases were less than 2 percent.
"Simply put," said Correll, "we do not price gouge and we will not tolerate it. We completely agree with the governor that taking advantage of a tragic situation like this is 'shocking to the conscience.'
"We are offended by the allegation because we have made every effort possible to meet the extraordinary need in South Florida that occurred in preparation for the hurricane and immediately following the hurricane," Correll continued. "We are transporting products from as far away as North and South Carolina, operating all of our plywood and oriented strand board plants nationwide at full capacity, and we even have changed our product mix to produce more plywood for sheathing rather than specialty products.
"In fact, many of our local Florida customers said that they have gained greater respect for Georgia-Pacific because of our response and willingness to provide products," Correll said. "Further, we have and are continuing the process of donating 'Coronet' tissue products and food to those who so desperately need it in South Florida and in Louisiana," Correll concluded.
