ALL-STARS JUST MISS CHAMPIONSHIP RUN FANS PROUD DESPITE TEAM'S FINAL LOSS.

Byline: GIDEON RUBIN Special to the Daily News

QUARTZ HILL -- The Quartz Hill District 51 Little League 11- and 12-year-old all-stars won their three loser-bracket games decisively to advance to the championship of the double-elimination Section 2 Tournament at San Marino's Sierra Vista Park.

But the defending tournament champion Quartz Hill team lost 5-1 to Northridge's District 40 team.

``I know all of the coaches and parents are very proud of them. They played their butts off,'' Quartz Hill manager John Rush said.

``It was pretty tough for us. We had to commute TO COMMUTE. To substitute one punishment in the place of another. For example, if a man be sentenced to be hung, the executive may, in some states, commute his punishment to that of imprisonment.  twice as far as any other team, and they went into the loser bracket, and they won three in a row.''

Rush said Quartz Hill got excellent pitching throughout the tournament. In the tournament opener, Northridge scored the game's only run in the first inning.

``They're kids, and, of course, they were disappointed, but they took it well,'' Rush said. ``They were good sports.''

Rush said his team benefited from a great all-around effort, with the entire team contributing to the exciting comeback.

``They never gave up on themselves, and they accomplished a lot,'' Rush said. ``We're just really proud of their effort.''
