ALL-STAR TELETHON TO SPAN AIRWAVES.

At least 27 television networks have agreed to set aside their regular schedules to telecast tonight's star-studded benefit for terrorist attack victims and heroes.

Some radio stations will carry the event, which can also be seen live on the ``America: A Tribute to Heroes'' Web site (www.tributetoheroes.org), accessible via AOL keyword: Tribute and Yahoo! (tribute.yahoo.com).

Tom Cruise, Julia Roberts, Jim Carrey, Stevie Wonder, George Clooney, Will Smith and Billy Joel are among the stars who have agreed to donate their time. And the list keeps growing: Sheryl Crow, Celine Dion, Limp Bizkit, Enrique Iglesias, Sting, Mariah Carey, Wyclef Jean, Willie Nelson, Jimmy Smits and more.

Alicia Keys will be joined by Michael Jackson, U2, Bruce Springsteen and a handful of others for Donny Hathaway's classic ``Someday We'll All Be Free.''

The Dixie Chicks, who will be debuting a song written prior to the terrorist attacks titled ``I Believe In Love,'' said in a statement released Thursday that they are participating in the telethon ``because like everyone else, we want and need to do whatever we can to help.''

In the statement, they went on to say that ``it's easy and important to send money, but something inside just makes you want to do more. This tribute telethon is a great opportunity to help raise millions of dollars, say thanks to the men and women who put their lives on the line for us and to be a part of this amazing coming together of our nation.''

The show will be broadcast live and commercial-free on the East Coast from stages in New York and Los Angeles. There will be no live audience, and organizers refuse to say where the events will be held for security reasons.

Joel Gallen, who has produced such events as the MTV Movie Awards, is running the show.

The United Way announced that its September 11 Fund has been designated to receive the money raised from the benefit.

Such cooperation across the television dial has little precedent.

Although other cable networks may sign on, some have declined to participate. The ESPN ESPN Entertainment and Sports Programming Network  sports networks - ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN Classic and ESPNews - will stick with regular programming.

Nickelodeon, which airs children's programming regularly through 10 p.m. on Fridays, and The Disney Channel are also not taking the telethon.

KCRW-FM (89.9) will simulcast the telethon live, from 6 to 8 p.m. At KNX-AM (1070), station programmers will delay-broadcast the telethon.
