ALL-STAR FOOTBALL: ALL-STAR GAME GIVES SOME PREP ATHLETES FINAL CHANCE.

Byline: Gerry Gittelson Daily News Staff Writer

Devin Montgomery looks to Saturday's third Valley Conference All-Star Football Game at Cal State Northridge (7 p.m. kickoff) as more than a celebration for high school seniors.

The Alemany High wide receiver figures it's an opportunity to showcase his skills one last time, perhaps for a college coach who still has a scholarship available.

``Devin is the one guy who really is on the bubble,'' said East coach Jim Bonds of Alemany. ``This is a good chance for him to show what he can do.''

Montgomery gained 1,500 yards in eight, eight-man football Eight-man football is a type of American football, generally played by small high schools. Rules and formations vary greatly among states and even among different organizations, but the one constant is eight players from each team on the field at one time, as opposed to eleven-man  games as a tailback at Ribet Academy when he was in ninth grade. He transferred to San Fernando San Fernando, city, Argentina

, where he concentrated on basketball for two years before transferring to Alemany and playing both sports as a senior.

Montgomery took a full load of summer school classes last year and was late learning the Alemany offense. He didn't catch a pass until the fifth game but finished with 45 receptions for 796 yards and eight touchdowns, helping the Indians to the Division III

 semifinals.

Bonds said Montgomery wants to play football and basketball in college.

Next position, please: Dallas Enoch of Calabasas High is playing defensive end for the West, which is significant because Enoch has never played a down of defense.

A two-year All-Frontier League quarterback who passed for 1,914 yards and 17 touchdowns last fall, Enoch needed to find a position because the West features quarterbacks Nick Czernek of Newbury Park, Tim Bird of Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  and Robert Muller Robert Muller (born 1923 in Belgium) is an employee of the United Nations, whose ideas about world government, world peace and spirituality led to the increased representation of religions in the UN, including New Age cults and traditional cults.  of Crespi.

``Defense is new for me, but it's fun. I feel all right about it,'' Enoch said.

``Dallas is just happy to be on the team. The bottom line is he wants to play,'' said Calabasas coach Larry Edwards, an assistant for the West. ``We're just trying to get guys in the game, and Dallas is 6-foot-4 and 240 pounds, so he's pretty good on defense. He's a fine athlete, no question it, and he's showing a real positive attitude.''

Add new positions: Enoch isn't the only one adjusting to a new position. The West's Steven Smith Stephen Smith, Steve Smith, or Steven Smith may refer to:

In sports:
  • Steve Smith (Carolina Panthers) (born 1979), American football player
  • Steve Smith (running back) (born 1965), American football player
(Poly) and Clifton Herbert (Quartz Hill) are listed as wide receivers. Smith played tailback for Poly and caught 10 passes this season. Herbert, who switched between quarterback and running back at Quartz Hill, had four receptions as a senior.

Kicked to the curb: Burbank's Scott Talamantes, the East's only kicker, dropped out Tuesday because the game conflicts with the school prom. Talamantes averaged 41.6 yards per punt and converted two field goals this year.

``Scott's girlfriend put her foot down,'' organizer Bill Speer Bill Speer (born March 20, 1942 in Lindsay, Ontario) is a retired professional ice hockey player who played 135 games in the World Hockey Association and 130 games in the National Hockey League.  said. ``He was in tears about it, and I think coach Jim Bonds was, too.''
