ALL-SANTA CLARITA VALLEY: GIRLS' GOLF GOLFER OF THE YEAR STEVY LOY, SR., VALENCIA.

Byline: - Dave Shelburne

Loy, who led Valencia High to its first two appearances in the Southern Section girls' golf championship, was the scoring leader of a 2005 Vikings team that finished 32-2, placed second in the Northern Divisional, seventh in the section final and ranked No. 1 by the Daily News.

It was an exceptional conclusion to an exceptional year for Loy, who warmed up for her senior season by qualifying for two U.S. Golf Association national championships last summer: the U.S. Girls Junior Amateur and the U.S. Women's Amateur.

The best part, Loy said, was the team part.

Valencia, the most successful team in Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  girls' golf history, received medalist honors from five of six starters this season.

The Vikings needed all of that depth to hold off a 30-6 Hart team that won the first two Foothill League matches, nearly won the league title and briefly replaced Valencia atop the Daily News rankings before finishing No. 2.

The pivotal match came in the third league tournament. Playing after the first two holes with just five golfers after Loy became ill and had to leave the course, Valencia received co- medalist scores of 1-over 32 from Michelle Mannix and Jenny Kim and set a school record of 170 at El Cariso Golf Course. Hart finished second with a school-record 181.

``We had a special team in terms of chemistry as well as skill and talent that was together for two years, and you don't see that too often,'' Loy said of the Vikings, who in 2004 won their first league title, finished second in division and 10th in section.
