RUNNER OF THE YEAR

Alfredo Coronado, Sr., Hart

Coronado helped Hart High, once the area's dominant program, regain some of its luster. He led the Indians, state champions in 1990-92, to their first league title since 1995, was also the Indians' first individual league champion and individual Southern Section finals qualifier qual·i·fi·er

``It feels great,'' Coronado said, after winning the Foothill League title. ``It was my goal. There was a lot of pressure today. I knew (Saugus High's Derek Somerville) was going to be right up there. I knew I had to have something at the end.''

Coronado beat Somerville by eight seconds in the finals. Coronado won by eight and nine seconds in the two regular-season Foothill meets.

His season ended with a 35th-place finish at the Southern Section Div. I final at Mt. San Antonio College Mt. San Antonio College (commonly called Mt. ALL-SANTA CLARITA VALLEY: GIRLS' CROSS COUNTRY

RUNNER OF THE YEAR

Shannon Murakami, Jr., Saugus

Shannon Murakami, the state Div. I champion, first met former Canyon High standout Lauren Fleshman at the Stanford Invitational in September.

``So you're the one who's been breaking all my records?'' Fleshman asked the Saugus star.

Murakami posted the fastest Mt. San Antonio College time in Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  history at the Mt. ``It feels great just to be compared to her,'' Murakami said.

She'll have a chance next year to do something Fleshman never did: win two state cross-country titles.

Murakami won her first Foothill League title this year and led Saugus to its first girls' state meet appearance. The Centurions finished sixth.

She had plenty of strong finishes this year - fourth at Woodbridge of Irvine, eighth at Stanford and third in Southern Section Div. I. She won the season-opening Seaside Seaside.
