Medaling at the state championships was just the icing on the cake following a successful season filled with many accomplishments.

Among the 48 golfers participating, Villela was the lone area golfer to compete at Red Hill Country Club in Rancho Cucamonga Rancho Cucamonga (răn`chō k'kəmäng`gə), city (1990 pop. 101,409), San Bernardino co., S Calif. , where she carded a 3-over 76 to finish fourth.

``I felt great going into the day. I came out here just to play and have fun,'' Villela said. ``I didn't want to come out here with the attitude to shoot 5-under. Whatever happens, happens.''

In addition to becoming the first golfer in San Fernando history to qualify for the state championships, Villela's contributions of equipment and advice to her team spoke volumes about her commitment.

Crescenta Valley, ranked first on the Daily News Top 10 for fourweeks, relied on the veteran presence of Christine Cho, Leslie Hyun and Amy Pramuantong and the contributions of freshman standouts Katie Park and Sally Chung to win the Pacific League title, holding off competitive teams from San Marino, Mark Keppel of Alhambra and Burroughs of Burbank. With several key golfers returning next season, Johnson should have the Falcons, who finished 12th at the Southern Section team final at Soule Park Golf Course, poised to build off this season's success.
