Wrestler of the Year

Kevin Dunn

ROYAL, SENIOR, 125 POUNDS

An almost unstoppable specimen during the regular season, Dunn had the best season of his career with a 53-4 record and 28 pins during a mostly healthy season after being slowed by a shoulder injury last year. He lost only two matches this year before reaching the state championship meet in Bakersfield. The back-to-back CIF (1) (Common Intermediate Format) A standard video format used in videoconferencing. He continued his dominance at the Masters Meet, where he pinned three of his four opponents -- including Santa Ana's Humberto Barerra -- to become Royal's second Masters champion. He was named the tournament's lower-weight MVP (Multimedia Video Processor) A high-speed DSP chip from Texas Instruments, introduced in 1994. That helped him earn a tough draw in his bracket going into the state championships.

Dunn won his first match, but ran into Bullard of Fresno's Chris Ramos. The Highlanders standout lost to Ramos in a 6-4 decision after having a 4-2 lead late in the second period. He wasn't able to hold off Ramos, who won the match with two 2-point takedowns. That sent Dunn to a tough part of the consolation bracket.

There he met against Oakdale's Trevor Machado-Ching, a 103-pound champion as a freshman and 112-pound fourth-place state finisher last year. Machado-Ching beat Dunn in a 4-0 decision, eliminating him from the two-day tournament. It was the only time Dunn was shut out this season. Dunn's career record: 176-21.
