Some 400 runners young and old pounded the asphalt asphalt (ăs`fôlt, –fălt), brownish-black substance used commonly in road making, roofing, and waterproofing. Chemically, it is a natural mixture of hydrocarbons.  Sunday at the Assistance League of Santa Clarita's 13th annual Footsteps Run-Walk. The footrace - with 5K and 10K events and a 1K Fun Run for those under 10 - benefits Operation School Bell, a league project that aims to provide shoes and clothing to needy children.

``It's been a great day,'' said president Durinda Evanoff, who hoped to raise about $15,000 from the event. ``The sun is shining. We had great participation.''

The event drew exercise fanatics from throughout Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  and beyond.

``I think running releases a lot of the stress,'' said Nick Trozzi, 42, of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. . ``You're just concentrating on feeling good during the race.''

Chris Morley, 46, of Valencia trotted out of the park with eight neighbors and friends on the 5K race, just as daylight warmed the last of the crisp night air.

``You can feel it when the sun came up,'' she said. ``It was getting pretty warm.''

``There's really a challenge to it,'' he said. ``And you don't get old as quickly.''

Shari Nicholls, the third woman to finish the 10K, started running just two years ago.

``When I started running, I lost 40 pounds,'' said Nicholls, 54, of Saugus. ``It's been a lot of fun.''

``I like cross-country,'' he said. ``I don't run as well on asphalt. It doesn't have as much bounce. I prefer dirt.''
