Such teams compete against the principal athletic teams at other colleges/universities, or in the case of  - with no seniors - and dives right into the very competitive Golden League. Will the Eagles fly?

Underrated Highland High surprised several favored teams last season, falling one game short of the Southern Section Division II finals. Palmdale High's Matt Leonard, a 6-4, 290-pound blue-chip lineman, is considered the prize of the Antelope Valley. What college will he choose? And will Falcons quarterback Grant Livermont, a gifted passer sidelined by injuries the past two seasons, stay healthy? If so, circle Nov. 14 on your calendar. That's when Palmdale will travel to Highland for the season finale. The Golden League title probably will be on the line.

Quartz Hill High features one of the biggest and most physical offensive lines in all of California. Can the Rebels (3-7) rebound from a winless Golden League campaign in 1996?

Littlerock High's Michael ``Tiny'' Woods amassed over 1,000 yards rushing as a part-timer last season. Can the 5-8, 148-pounder withstand the punishment of being the go-to back in the Lobos' smash-mouth attack?

When Paraclete's star tailback Sal Iabichella quit the team early last season, unheralded junior Dominic Washington stepped right in and gained 1,845 yards with 23 touchdowns. With a full season ahead of him, how far can Washington go?

Traditionally strong Boron High has a new coach, George McGowan, and first-year players at most key positions. Can the Bobcats still roar?

In 1995 Antelope Valley Christian went undefeated to win the eight-man Southern Section title. But last year, with most of the talent gone, the Eagles won just three games. Running back James Pratt and quarterback Josh Pratt, both transfers, reportedly are poised to turn the program back around. Can the Eagles soar again?

Bethel Christian is ranked third in the preseason eight-man poll. The opener with No. 1 Rio Hondo Prep tonight will give coach James Vondra a chance to erase the Eagles' worst defeat of 1996, a 36-0 whitewash whitewash, white fluid commonly used as an inexpensive, impermanent coating for walls, fences, stables, and other exterior structures. It varies in composition, being generally a mixture of lime (quicklime), water, flour, salt, glue, and whiting, with other . Can Bethel Christian launch its season in high fashion?

Indeed, challenges face all the area teams, and as the season unfolds, there will be come-from-behind upsets and total blowouts. There will be heroes and goats. Until then, there's anticipation.

When the Bishop family sits down for dinner, football is the main conversation. Senior Chris Bishop is a key lineman for Quartz Hill High, and both parents attend every game.

``It's very exciting when your kid is playing,'' said Bishop's mother, Marci. ``When Quartz Hill plays Antelope Valley High, it's unbelievable. You can't even get a seat unless you get there early for the JV game.''

She said cold, windy weather - an area trademark beginning in October and intensifying as the season progresses - never keeps the family away. ``We bundle up, and we don't even feel it because of all the adrenaline. My daughter was in the marching band, so we've been going for a while. It can get like Lambeau Field (in Green Bay, Wisc.).''

Quartz Hill coach John Albee is in his 30th year.

``There's always a lot to look forward to when the season is just starting,'' Albee said. ``The community has always been supportive, and I believe we've always played a good caliber of football in the Antelope Valley. High school football is important around here. We're a family-oriented community.''

Ron Williams, manager of Denny's restaurant on Palmdale Boulevard, is anticipating the usual postgame rush tonight.

``We'll have 35 kids in here waiting for a table,'' Williams knowingly predicted. ``It's a big difference once football starts.''
