Byline: SUE DOYLE Staff Writer

VALENCIA -- It could be the Coachella of school jazz band concerts.

Super Jazz X is an annual festival at which local high school and junior high bands compete on three stages throughout the day, playing up to four of their best tunes. About 40 bands are expected to perform at this weekend's event.

``It's an excellent, excellent festival,'' said Jeff Stephan, director of La Mesa La Mesa (lə mā`sə), city (1990 pop. 52,931), San Diego co., S Calif., a suburb of San Diego; inc. 1912. It is a retail center and a popular residence for upper- and middle-income professionals in the San Diego area.  Junior High's Los Lobos Jazz Band.

While La Mesa is a returning competitor, this will be the first year for band director Jason Marshall Jason Marshall (born February 22, 1971 in Cranbrook, British Columbia, Canada) is a professional ice hockey defenceman who currently plays in Germany for the Frankfurt Lions of the Deutsche Eishockey-Liga.

About 16 students in the high school's jazz band have prepared throughout the year for this festival and others that typically happen in the spring.

Marshall said that because there's a concentration of festivals now, he balances out performances by having students play in public at other times throughout the year. They jammed at the Valencia Town Center in December and the Circle of Hope 5K walk in April.

Just as the annual Coachella Valley Coachella Valley (kō'əchĕl`ə), arid region, SE Calif., N of the Salton Sea. ``What's neat about this one is that while there are festivals all over Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, , all of the local high school bands will be there,'' Marshall said. ``So it's neat to hear the other groups and support them and to go up against them.''

About 20 students at Valencia High School play saxophones, guitars, trombones, trumpets and piano in the jazz band. They have played at four festivals this year and only played the same group of songs at two of them, said Robert Babko, Valencia High School jazz band director.
