The event was secured for the city by Beverley Harris, trainer of the Liverpool-based Carolinas Jazz Band, which won its division at last year's championships held in Swansea.

The 29-year-old, from Kirk by, said: "It's been a lot of hard work and has taken a lot of time. I had hoped to get it here last year for Capital of Culture, but it was Wales's turn to host it.

"All the marching jazz bands from all over the country will be coming to Liverpool to compete.

Last year the contest attracted 45, and I'm hoping we'll get even more with it being such a great venue.

"Although I've been successful in securing a few halls for the bands to sleep in during the weekend I need to find a lot more.

"I'd also like to appeal to any sponsors who would like to help us with costs such as publicity, donations of trophies, food, or raffle prizes."
