Other marquee attractions will include Kronos Quartet (Oct. 11), jazz pianist Keith Jarrett (Feb. 25), Minimalist composer-pianist Terry Riley (Oct. 9) and Obie Award-winning monologist Spalding Gray (April 13-18).

And, in their West Coast debut, French-Albanian choreographer Angelin Preljocaj and his 24-member company will present what's being described as a darkly erotic rereading of Prokofiev's ``Romeo and Juliet'' (Sept. 17-19).

Perhaps as significant, for devotees of this eclectic series, is that most performances will take place in Royce Hall, which reopened earlier this spring after extensive earthquake retrofitting and restoration. The building, closed for more than four years, generally is considered to have some of the best acoustics of any U.S. performance space outside Manhattan. Two other UCLA

venues, Schoenberg Hall and Haines Hall, will host additional events.

Besides its traditional programming of dance, chamber music, early music, world music and jazz, UCLA is beginning a Puppet Theater Series, with the Jim Henson Festival of Puppet Theater, featuring three companies from Peru, South Africa and San Francisco (Sept. 25-27, Oct. 24); and a Word of Mouth Series, with spoken performances by U.S. Poet Laureates Robert Pinsky and Robert Hass (April 22); National Public Radio talk-show host Terry Gross (Feb. 21); and PBS PBS
