ALL THAT GLITTERS IS GRAMMY MEMORABLE MOMENTS EXPECTED AMID THE GRAB FOR GOLDEN STATUES.

Byline: Valerie Kuklenski Staff Writer

Platinum is the new gold in the record business, until the annual presentation of the golden Grammy Awards Grammy Awards

Annual awards given by the Recording Academy (officially the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences). The first Grammies (the name is a dimunitive of “gramophone”) were given in 1958.

Going for the gold tonight in the record of the year field are the Black Eyed Peas This article is about the American hip hop group. For the vegetable, see Black-eyed pea.

and Norah Jones Norah Jones (born Geethali Norah Jones Shankar on March 30 1979 in Brooklyn, New York) is an American singer-songwriter, musician and occasional actress of American and Indian descent.  (``Here We Go Again''), Green Day (``American Idiot''), Los Lonely Boys (``Heaven'') and Usher with Lil Jon and Ludacris (``Yeah!'').

Kanye West's pack-leading 10 nominations include a bid for album of the year for ``The College Dropout (1) On magnetic media, a bit that has lost its strength due to a surface defect or recording malfunction. If the bit is in an audio or video file, it might be detected by the error correction circuitry and either corrected or not, but if not, it is often not noticed by the human .'' Other contenders: Charles' duet collection ``Genius Loves Company,'' Green Day's ``American Idiot,'' Keys' ``The Diary of Alicia Keys'' and Usher's ``Confessions.''

The Grammys Awards ceremony is always good for a few surprises (or are they shocks?), but here's what we can tell you to expect when the show airs (tape-delayed) at 8 p.m. on CBS (Cell Broadcast Service) See cell broadcast.  (Channel 2):

Everybody's talking about Jennifer Lopez's first-ever live duet with her Grammy-nominated husband, Marc Anthony. That's fine, but let's get to what's really important: What will she be wearing? J.Lo's legendary taped-on green gown would be a tough act to follow - and hard to keep in place while performing.

Call it the ``We Are the World'' moment. Stevie Wonder, Bono, Norah Jones, Alicia Keys, Tim McGraw, Brian Wilson, Al Green and the members of Velvet Revolver are among the artists who will gather to sing the Beatles' ``Across the Universe'' as a fund-raiser for Asian tsunami relief efforts. After it is aired, the performance will be available for downloading on iTunes.com for 99 cents, with proceeds benefiting survivors of the deadly Dec. 26 waves.

The multiple-host idea of the past two years has been shelved in favor of a solo act. Of course, rapper and movie star - and, this year, jazz nominee - Queen Latifah could be considered multiple hosts in one.

 - Star Jones Reynolds on E! or Joan and Melissa Rivers on TV Guide (both 6 to 8 p.m.) - and see who gets misidentified or otherwise offended on the red carpet. Kathy Griffin is back on duty as well for E!, despite speculation that her crack at the Golden Globes about young Dakota Fanning being in drug rehab would cut short her career in entertainment industry commentary.

Melissa Etheridge may want to swallow some ragged gravel in preparation for her tribute to the late Janis Joplin, who is among this year's lifetime achievement award recipients. Etheridge will perform with Joss Stone. James Brown is set to join Usher on stage, and Oscar-nominated Jamie Foxx takes a turn with Keys.

It's hard to predict who will win in the best pop collaboration with vocals field, but it's a sure thing that the acceptance speech will involve a glance toward heaven. The late Ray Charles has two nominations, against one from the departed Johnny Cash, the Paul McCartney/Eric Clapton rendition of ``Something'' from ``Concert for George (Harrison),'' and Stevie Wonder's ``Moon River'' track off ``The Ultimate (Henry) Mancini.''

... and what you won't see but can read about later:

The bulk of the 107 awards, presented before the telecast, will be doled out at such a brisk pace that the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences The National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, Inc. is known variously as The Recording Academy or NARAS. So what if Martin Scorsese missed out on the Directors Guild Award for ``The Aviator'' and may wind up empty-handed yet again on Oscar night? He still has a shot at a Grammy, as a producer in the longform video category for ``Martin Scorsese Presents: The Blues - A Musical Journey.''
