The rain has stopped, the stars are out, and the smell of Oscars is in the air.

 dresses and shiny tuxes sashay down the red carpet come rain or shine for the 62th annual Golden Globe Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.

But before they hit the ballroom for the three-hour ceremony (dinner and drinks), Joan and Melissa Rivers from the TV Guide Channel and Star Jones Reynolds of E! Entertainment Television will be vying for their attention as fans scream in the background.

Although they can't control the weather, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which sponsors the event, does its best to ensure that the Globes are a glamorous affair. Having 10 picks for best movies helps (five for drama, five for comedy/musical). And it doesn't overlook television, giving those ``Desperate Housewives'' - Marcia Cross, Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Eva Longoria and Nicollette Sheridan - a chance to not only make a splashy splash·y

Other best-picture nominations are ``Hotel Rwanda'' and ``Kinsey'' in the drama category, and ``Ray,'' ``Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,'' ``The Incredibles'' and ``Phantom of the Opera'' in the musical or comedy category.

Among those up for acting nominations are Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio, Uma Thurman, Nicole Kidman, Scarlett Johansson, Hilary Swank, Annette Bening, Kate Winslet, Renee Zellweger, Jim Carrey and Kevin Spacey spac·ey

. Jamie Foxx is a triple threat with a best-acting nomination for ``Ray,'' a supporting-actor nomination for ``Collateral'' and a best-actor nom on the TV side for the FX movie ``Redemption.''

And one of the ``Desperate Housewives'' gals may get a return trip to the podium, since the show has four nominations - one for best comedy or musical television series, and Cross, Hatcher and Huffman face off in the category of best actress for a TV comedy/musical, along with Debra Messing of ``Will & Grace'' and Sarah Jessica Parker for ``Sex and the City.'' Speaking of the Oscars, nominations will be announced Jan. 25, and the awards will be given out Feb. 27.
