ALL ROADS LEAD TO BARCELONA IN THE FIRST GLOBAL SELECTION
PROGRAM OF OFFICIAL TORCHBEARERS FOR THE OLYMPIC GAMES
BARCELONA, Spain, April 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The Barcelona Olympic Organizing Committee has always defined the 1992 Summer Olympic Games as the most universal in history. The Coca-Cola Company (NYSE: KO) today announced its support to help achieve this ideal. The Company will work with National Olympic Committees around the world to select people to participate in a historic international Olympic torch run when the Summer Games come to Spain in 1992.
The International Olympic Torchbearers program will mark the first time in Olympic history that runners from many nations will be involved in a host-country torch run. In the Olympic spirit of global cooperation and friendship, 200 people from more than 50 countries will be chosen as official torchbearers through various national selection programs. The international runners will join thousands of Spanish citizens to help carry the Olympic Flame to the Opening Ceremonies of the 1992 Summer Games in Barcelona.
In announcing the program, Josep Miquel Abad, chief executive officer of the Barcelona Olympic Organizing Committee, said, "With the Barcelona Games' theme -- 'Friends For Life,' we could think of no better demonstration of our theme than inviting new friends from around the world to assist us in bringing the flame to Barcelona."
Involvement in this program continues a 64-year tradition of Coca-Cola support for the Olympic movement, said Donald R. Keough, president and chief operating officer of The Coca-Cola Company. "Never before have people from countries outside the host country for an Olympic Games had the opportunity to participate in the torch run," he said. "The Coca-Cola organization is proud and delighted to help make it possible for these special 'friends for life' to go to Spain for the Barcelona Torch Run."
The international participants will be chosen in cooperation with local National Olympic Committees through a variety of national selection programs, such as community athletic events and citizen nominations of deserving individuals. Each participating country will announce its selection program within the next few weeks.
The international runners will each carry an official torch bearing the actual Olympic Flame for a 500-meter segment of the 5,562 kilometer relay. After completing their run, the runners will keep the torches they carried as a special memento of their experience.
The universal symbolism of the flame and its torch have been a part of Olympics since the beginning of the ancient games in Greece in 776 B.C. The modern torch run dates back to the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Today, the run has become a highly anticipated celebration throughout an Olympic host country.
The Olympic torch run in Spain will begin in the northern Mediterranean port city of Empuries on June 13. The flame will be carried through the 17 autonomous regions of Spain by several thousand Spaniards, in addition to the 200 internationl runners.
The run will conclude in Barcelona with the lighting of the stadium caldron during the Opening Ceremonies of the Summer Olympic Games on July 25.
Coca-Cola is the official soft drink of the 1992 Olympics. The Coca-Cola Company's association with the Olympic Games goes back to 1928, longer than any other corporate organization. The Company is a worldwide sponsor of the 1992 Olympic Winter and Summer Games, and recently became the first company to sign on as a worldwide sponsor of the 1994 Winter Games in Lillehammer, Norway, and the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta, Georgia.
