Byline: SUE DOYLE Staff Writer

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  -- Connie Bullock's first fly-fishing experience took place from the bank of a lake.

She read a book while her friend fished.

At the time, she wasn't one for the outdoors.

But today, she's president of the Santa Clarita Casting Club, a nonprofit A corporation or an association that conducts business for the benefit of the general public without shareholders and without a profit motive.

It was about 10 years ago when Bullock decided to give fly fishing another try. Living then by the beach, she joined a group in Long Beach and learned the techniques: how to catch, release and make fishing flies out of feathers.

Member Bill Creitz switched to fly fishing after more than 40 years of traditional fishing. The change happened one day after he and two friends caught about 90 trout using worms. The 52-year-old Valencia man wondered what the challenge was in that.

``It was like an assembly line,'' he said. ``I thought there had to be something different and more challenging.''

He found that challenge after taking a fly-fishing course about four years ago, and he hasn't touched a spinning rod since then. Now he aims to teach the sport to his 17-year-old son.

Retired fireman Rod Wilmot joined the club to improve his fly-fishing skills. As his skills improve, the 59-year-old hopes to travel out of state and tackle larger waters in rugged places like Utah and Alaska.

But then he wonders, why stop there?

``I'd like to do the whole country,'' he said.
