STUDIO CITY - Lloyd and Doris Dent will happily discuss sometimes-taboo subjects like politics and religion, but they don't like talking about themselves.

Lloyd chairs the charitable foundation at Sherman Oaks United Methodist Church United Methodist Church, in the United States, religious body formed by the union in 1968 of the Evangelical United Brethren Church and the Methodist Church (see Methodism). . Doris works to make its facilities more accessible for the handicapped, raises funds for scholarships with the Valley University Women and serves as secretary of the Valley Grassroots for Democracy.

At Christmastime, they go caroling to sick congregants. For 20 years, she gave up time out of a packed schedule to serve on the board of the church's nursery school nursery school, educational institution for children from two to four years of age. It is distinguishable from a day nursery in that it serves children of both working and nonworking parents, rarely receives public funds, and has as its primary objective to promote .

Married to Doris for 45 years, Lloyd, a semi-retired attorney, gives her credit for prodding his conscience to be more progressive. Doris doesn't think she's any different from anyone else, just someone who cares about the community in which she lives.

``I had a job where I worked 70-75 hours a week, so when I retired, I figured I could work 40 hours for free and still come out ahead,'' she laughed. ``It depends on whether you want to spend your retirement watching TV or doing something worthwhile.''
