ALL HEART, NO HEIGHT; DESERT MAKES PLAYOFF NOISE.

Byline: Gerry Gittelson Daily News Staff Writer

Their parents need to be short enough to squeeze into jet cockpits, which is why Desert High's basketball teams always lack height - one reason the Scorpions have never advanced to a Southern Section final. In fact, they last made it to the semifinals 20 years ago.

But Desert is still around. The surprising Scorpions (19-6) meet fourth-seeded Downey Calvary Chapel Calvary Chapel is a non-denominational, Protestant fellowship of churches which began in 1965 in Southern California. The term "fellowship of churches" is used in contrast to a denomination.  (24-4) in the Division V-AA quarterfinals tonight at Boron boron (bōr`ŏn) [New Gr. from borax], chemical element; symbol B; at. no. 5; at. wt. 10.81; m.p. about 2,300°C;; sublimation point about 2,550°C;; sp. gr. 2.3 at 25°C;; valence +3.  High. Tipoff is 7:30.

The High Desert League runner-up is winning under the command of first-year coach Phil Pleasant. Desert opened with a 76-55 win over Woodcrest Christian before toppling Whitewater 73-46, then Yeshiva yeshiva

 62-46 on Tuesday.

``What has kept us in the playoffs has been our defense,'' Pleasant said. ``We have been holding teams down.''

Calvary Chapel figures to be a formidable test. The Grizzlies The name Grizzlies may refer to:

  • Fresno Grizzlies, a minor league triple-a associate of the San Francisco Giants.
have won 16 straight on balanced scoring and crisp teamwork. Keegan McInnis, a 6-foot-3 senior, is averaging 18 points and freshman Tim Davisdom is averaging 14.

Calvary Chapel assistant coach Greg Higashi, weary of the three-hour bus trip, said Desert is not be taken lightly.

``They have come through the wild-card round so this is already their third game,'' he said. ``They will be tested, but from what I hear they play hard and are a pretty good team.''

Desert's Sidney Melvin, a 6-3 sophomore, is averaging 17 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks. He scored 23 points against Yeshiva. Jeff Lankford, a 6-1 senior, averages 15 points and eight rebounds and 6-1 junior Mike Williams Mike Williams may refer to:

Calvary Chapel can carry over. The Mustangs (22-2) need all the help they can get tonight against Division IV-A semifinal opponent Verbum Dei, the top-seeded defending state champion. Tipoff is 7:30 at Boron High.

, Verbum has appeared in five of the last six section finals.

``I know they are very good,'' Mojave coach Larry Satterfield said. ``They have a couple of (Division I) kids.''

``We know it's going to be a real challenge,'' Satterfield said. ``But that's why we play the games. We have responded to a lot of challenges this year.''

Rio Hondo Prep outlook: The at-large Kares continued their surprising run through the postseason Tuesday with a 55-47 upset of third-seeded Laguna Blanca This article is about the body of water. For the school, see Laguna Blanca School. For the National Park in the west of the province of Neuquén, Argentina, see Laguna Blanca National Park. .

A.V. Christian's advantages: Laguna Blanca's loss gives the second-seeded Eagles an easier path to the finals. In a 78-61 quarterfinal win at Pilgrim Tuesday, Matt Nurse, Peter Beaudin and Jamal Flanagan all registered double-doubles.

A.V. Christian's disadvantages: Rio Hondo Prep has the Eagles near home and the Kares are riding momentum as a Cinderella team.

A.V. Christian's keys to advancing: Nurse had 11 assists, Beaudin 17 rebounds and Flanagan 15 rebounds in the Pilgrim win. That kind of production is difficult for an opponent to overcome.

Directions: Take the 605 Freeway to the Lower Azusa exit and travel west to Cedar Avenue, then head north. Arroyo High is at 4921 North Cedar.

VERBUM DEI (22-7) AT MOJAVE (22-2).

Division IV-A

Verbum Dei update: The Eagles are one of Southern California's traditional powers and are the defending division and state champions. Guard Marlon Palmer is averaging 28 points and 6-9 senior center Delron Johnson has signed with UNLV UNLV University of Nevada, Las Vegas .

Mojave's advantages: The Mustangs are at home. . . . Johnson will prove to Verbum Dei he can play with anyone.

Mojave's disadvantages: Verbum Dei, which has produced talent such as Utah All-American Andre Miller, is a Division I or II school that plays in Division IV because of its small enrollment. But the Eagles are too good for this division.

Mojave's keys to advancing: Johnson had 20 points and 12 rebounds in Tuesday's 56-54 quarterfinal win over Santa Ana Calvary Chapel, but no other Mustangs were in double figures. Someone else, perhaps Koury Davis, Steve Fulton or Geoff Satterfield, must step up for Mojave to have a shot.

DOWNEY CALVARY CHAPEL (23-4) AT DESERT (19-6)

Division V-AA

Downey Calvary Chapel outlook: The Grizzlies are balanced, with four players scoring in double figures led by forward Keenan McInnis.

Desert's advantages: The Scorpions are at home and have impressive victories over Whitewater (73-46) and Yeshiva (62-46).

Desert's disadvantages: The Grizzlies won the Academy League and might have too much firepower for the Scorpions.

Desert's keys to advancing: Sidney Melvin, who had 23 in the second-round win over Yeshiva, needs another big game for the Scorpions to reach the semifinals.
