ALL HALE IRWIN; SENIOR PLAYERS AWED BY TOURNEY FAVORITE.

Byline: Dave Shelburne Daily News Staff Writer

Hale Irwin Hale S. Irwin (born June 3, 1945) is an American golfer. He is the uncle of Heath Irwin.

Irwin was born in Joplin, Missouri. He graduated from the University of Colorado in 1967, where he was a two-time All-Big Eight defensive back, as well as an academic All-American in

Everything else - from his PGA Tour The PGA Tour is an organization that operates the USA's main professional golf tours. It is headquartered in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, USA. Its name is officially rendered in all caps as “PGA TOUR".  history to his domination of senior competition to ringing endorsements by his peers - reinforces what the Romans sensed two millenniums ago:

Hale, the conquering hero.

anybody that can come out and dominate the tour any more than Hale has the last couple of years,'' said Larry Nelson Larry Gene Nelson (born September 10, 1947) is an American professional golfer who has won numerous tournaments at both the PGA Tour and Champions Tour level.

Larry Nelson was born in Fort Payne, Alabama and grew up in Acworth, Georgia, northwest of Atlanta.

winner on the PGA Tour. ``I don't know anybody on the horizon that can do that, that has the total game that would do that.''

A strong endorsement, but Irwin's play has reduced it almost to a statement of facts.

Since joining the senior tour in June 1995, Irwin has won 16 times in 70 starts. When he's not winning, most of the time he's the one to beat, having finished second another 18 times. He's been among the top five in every tournament he's entered this year.

The numbers get better in senior majors, where Irwin has been first or second in seven of his 13 starts. He's won the PGA (1) (Professional Graphics Adapter) An early IBM PC display standard for 3D processing with 640x480x256 resolution. It was not widely used.

Seniors' Championship three times and been runner-up in the Tradition, U.S. Senior Open and Ford Senior Players Championship (twice).

Two years ago, he became the fastest senior to earn $1 million in a career. This year, he became the fastest to earn $1 million in a season. In between, he tied Peter Thomson's 1985 record of nine wins in a season.

Irwin's play is affecting current mind sets as much as past records.John Jacobs John Jacobs is the name of:

shot 6-under-par 66 in the opening round of the Ford Senior Players Championship two weeks ago and wound up feeling inadequate.

``I played with a fella, Hale Irwin, that made me look like my 66 paled in comparison,'' Jacobs said. ``It just amazes me every time I play with him how good he plays.''

Worse yet for Irwin's senior rivals is the fact he is dominating this season without much preparation.

Off-course demands - he's building a house and designing golf courses - have cut into his time so much that Irwin has had to combine his practice and tournament time.

``I'm literally practicing golf while I'm playing,'' he said. ``I'm trying to get my game ready while I play, because, with my other interests, I have little time to practice.''

Irwin arrives at Riviera leading the '98 tour in earnings, putting, birdies, scoring, greens in regulation, top-10 finishes, rounds in the 60s and final-round average.

his first U.S. Senior Open title, so add motivation to the mix to a man who has won three U.S. Opens during his 26-year career on the PGA Tour.

At this stage, with more than $12 million in combined earnings from both tours, the majors, more than the money, are the motivating factor for Irwin.

Course familiarity could help. Irwin has played Riviera often in past L.A. Opens, winning there in 1976 for one of his 13 PGA Tour victories.

``I know where the shots need to go and how to play those shots . . . a little local knowledge on any golf course helps,'' he said.

A greater aid may be the state of his game in what is already a record year.

``There is a case to be made, I suppose, that I might be playing with greater consistency than last year,'' he said. ``Another case could be made that I'm playing just a touch better . . . I don't know at this stage.''
