The dolls cost 50 cents to $6 each. Proceeds go toward the auxiliary's pledge to raise $646,000 for new beds and monitors in the hospital's critical care unit. Nearly $400,000 of the auxiliary's pledge has been met. The four volunteers donated hundreds of hours to get the donated dolls ready for the annual sale. This year's doll sale almost didn't happen: Last year, after 17 years working with the dolls, former chairwoman Graves wanted to retire to spend more time with her family. But Lovitt volunteered to take over after reading a newspaper story about Grave's pending retirement. ``I became a volunteer just to work with the dolls,'' explained Lovitt. ``I just like dolls. They don't talk back, they don't need to be fed. When you dress them up they don't get dirty.'' With Lovitt, the volunteer group gains a tremendous amount of knowledge. Lovitt, president of the Antelope Valley Doll Club, has been working with dolls for more than 22 years and, with her daughter, owns more than 4,000 Barbie dolls. Graves, who has volunteered with the hospital auxiliary for 27 years, said she plans to continue helping out with the doll work and is extremely grateful to Lovitt. ``Well, it made me feel much, much happier,'' recalled Graves. ``I was really going to quit. She (Lovitt) heard me and she came to my rescue.'' ``Billie's the mentor,'' added Lovitt. ``Without her I couldn't do it.'' The New To You thrift shop is located at 320 W. Ave. I. Operating hours are 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and the store only accepts cash. For more information, call (661) 942-4119.
